How FAT Can You Be To Fly?

Thu Feb 19, 2004 5:13 am

So for my examination for my First Class Medical, my doctor and I were talking about my weight and how I need to put some on (6' 1" 150lbs). He said he normally tells people that they need to lose weight, especially if they plan on going to the airlines one day. My question is, how fat can you be and still fit in the cockpit? Thanks for your replies, funny and serious.  Wink/being sarcastic

6'1" and 150 lbs ? He must be kidding ! I'm 6'3", and 170 lbs, and I consider myself a bit overweight (but not that much - just enough to convince me to do sports  Wink/being sarcastic ).

Don't worry, you're heavy enough !

You can be fatter if you're flying an Airbus - thanks to the wonderful side-stick control, there is more space in front of you for your belly to hang out where the yoke would normally be on a Boeing, MD, etc  Big thumbs up

Are we talking about being able to fit through the doorway for the cockpit, or just being able to occupy the area the cockpit. Can't occupy the cockpit unless you can fit through the doorway Big grin

Your too fat if you can't get the seat belt extension around your waist or if you put yourself or others in some sort of unsafe condition.

I'll get nailed for this by someone. I once saw an Emery Captain who had to be pushing 350 pounds. If I had to guess I would say he was about 6' tall.

Airlines are looking to hire folks whose height is in proportion to weight. I went to an Air Inc. seminar and they told us that we should strive to maintain our high school/college weight. It's about image, and about the desire to retain healthy pilots for the long haul.

Had a CFI a while ago that was rather 'large.' Let me say that it's not too comfortable to be in the cockpit of a C150 with a medium size person, let alone a larger person. Especially in smaller planes, I would think w&b would be a big problem...even more so than actualy squeezing in.

Judging by some of the pilots at Continental, there is no restriction on this...
