Imperial Terminal At LAX

Thu Feb 19, 2004 2:29 pm

I remember back in the 80's that the old World Airways used to operate out of the Imperial Terminal at LAX rather than the other terminals. It wasn't very convenient to the other terminals for connections sake, and I'm not sure of it offered the same amenities present a the others.

Why did World Airways opt to use the Imperial Terminal? Did any other carriers use it at any other time? Also, is it being used for scheduled ops now? If not what is it used for?

Not all who wander are lost....

I also believe Transamerica Airlines utilized the West Imperial terminal as well.

Imperial Terminal was primarily used for charter ops...all of that changed when MGM Grand Air came in and revolutionize the LAX-JFK market with it's all F class product. I heard it was an incredible experience. They turned Imperial into a private club type of atmosphere since that is where your "experience" began. All of the celebs used to use MGM Grand Air. I believe they used modified DC-8's if I am not mistaken. At one point, I think they used 727's. All I remember is getting off of my red-eye trips from HNL and my sister picking me up to go home to El Segundo and we would pass Imperial Terminal and I would see that MGM plane there and wish, man I wanna go to JFK.

I found some pics of MGM Grand Air in the database that I wanted to post:

The 727's operated in an all First Class configuration, but from the brochures that I had of it, the service was beyond First...

The DC-8's operated a two class service, First Class and "Grand Class Coach".

Enjoy!

No scheduled opps out of Imperial terminal, most sports teams coming into LAX use the W.Imperial Terminal.

The Imperial terminal is used as sort of a parking space for all these international flights that are parking for the day... also, I remembered deplaning at Imperial Terminal when I flew in with CX... the TBIT is too crowded in summer or at certain days, and we have to be bused in and out of those far parking spots. last December, I noticed that one of the evening CX's LAX flights (A346 one) was using the Imperial terminal, as they were using the bus gates... There are parking bridges and very limited facilities (small seating area and bathrooms) at each of these gates (all separated in little booths), and you use buses to transport you back to the terminal.

I recall reading a Lan Chile report here and the author told us that they were bused out to the Imperial terminal.

You got the Imperial terminal confused with the remote parking. The imperial terminal is on the south side of the airport.
