Spotting At Heathrow?

Thu Feb 19, 2004 7:38 pm

I'm coming over to LHR tomorrow for two days and while it won't be all spotting (I want to catch a show and do something cultural!), I want to get a good few shots.

I believe 27L in use for landings in the mornings (to 3pm) this week. This being the case, what's the best place for photos of arriving aircraft? Is the bridge near Hatton Cross station a good place - i.e. do the police chase people away from there?

Thanks for any help!

I normally use the bridge near Hatton Cross for spotting (registration-collecting) reasons. It might be OK for photography. A better option would be a field near Hatton Cross. I don't know the exact directions (even though I've been there before), but UTA or someone else can help you.

If the planes are landing on 27R, go to the BA maintainence area. It's simple to get there: go to Hatton Cross and then walk for about 10 minutes. There might be a bus from the central bus station, but I normally use the tube and then my feet.

The foot bridge would be your best bet, you get a nice, elevated view of aircraft seconds before touchdown. The Metropolitan police patrol the perimetre area of LHR all day, but they won't stop you unless they feel you're acting suspicious or something like that.

No problem Pearson, if you see a spotter on the bridge, that'll probably be me. Fingers crossed for good weather and perhaps a PIA 777 . . .

Thanks for the info!

With regards to the PK 772 when you're there - it leaves LHR on Sa at 2000 to ISB (PK786), and arrives from ISB at 1515 (PK785) on Sa.

Kaitak - Not sure you are interested but it appears United's new livery 777 will be arriving into LHR Friday morning (UA 938)...I believe it arrives sometime around ten in the morning. Might be worth checking out?

Directions to the Myrtle Avenue field for 27L arrivals/09R departures:

Come out of Hatton Cross station on the side of the A30 dual carriageway (not the bus station side). Cross the dual carriageway so you are outside the BP Connect garage and turn right so you are walking in the direction of T4. Within 5 minutes you'll come to the field on your left.

I've been at LHR most of the day and they used 9R for takesoffs and 9L for landings all day, not even a 3 o'clock runway swap. I stupidly missed the new UAL colours though  Sad.

According to BBC weather forecast, I am pretty sure runway 09 will be used on friday.  Smile

Could anyone confirm UA 777 in new c/s will be flying to LHR tomorrow?

Cheers

Hi Kaitak

I was at LHR this afternoon and it was 9L for landings and 9R for takeoffs.
If its 9L for landings again tommorow I would suggest taking the bus (H30 is free) to the main road junction near BA Waterside. Here you can get unobstructed views of aircraft on approach to 9L.

I'm also going to be at LHR again tommorow to take BA25 to HKG at 6.30pm so look out for me!
