Most of my travel is on Embraer Regional Jets or ATRs, so when I do travel on a mainline jet with first class (and the flight is over about 90 minutes), I do upgrade via elite upgrades or certificates.... amounts to about 1 in 4 segments (or about 90% of the flights I'm on that even have a FC cabin). I normally do 60-70 revenue segments a year.

Never. I am a college student. And I can't justify (maybe ever, even after college) spending over $1000 additionaly dollars for a leather chair.

As a non-rev, I see first class on some occasions, maybe 1 out of 3 flights. As for business class, that has been almost non-existent. I fly mainly econo-box, and it is no fun on long haul Asian flights.

Again as a non-rev I see f/c one in a while. Over the holidays I took 8 flights and one was in First (EWR-BOS).

Almost never.

Did once back in late 80's. Got bumped up on an early, early Sunday morning flight out of Houston, as I was dressed nice, I guess. I was all by my lonesome in FC. Hardly anyone on the plane, anyhow.

Once on NWA - on Easter Sunday from MSP to DFW. There were FOUR (count them... 4) people on board. We each got our own row of First Class seats and our own flight attendant! They must have really needed that DC-9 in DFW!

The second time was on a Delta 757 on Sept 9, 2001. I wanted a window seat and the only one available was in F/C... upgrade for free! Only probem... I had to drive back to DFW from MSY!

generally, on AA and UA, i fly business where available or first, since I accumulated so many miles during my college years and use them mostly for upgrades. Now, with my job, I always have to buy last minute tickets at near full fare, when going on vacation and been upgraded about 2/3 of the time.

international, same story from having lived in singapore for many years, and SQ takes care of me and my family though we generally buy raffles class tickets and my mother is a PPS Club member, so at least 2 of the 4 of us are upgraded to first when space is available. When I lived in London, and now in NYC going to London all the time, I usually buy a premium economy ticket (on VS OF COURSE!  Smile), and always get upgraded (with one exception) but its probably more a function of my being a virgin flying club gold member, and only when flying with family have i "paid" for an upper class seat (though it was my parents who footed the bill). ba, i was upgraded once to club from world traveller on the 12 flights i have taken with them.

but to answer your question, i fly first or business about 6 times a month on average.

Quite a lot, actually. That's a perk of being 100,000+ mile Platinum Elite.

Occasionally when there's an obnoxious crowd up front, especially going into DCA (read that as congressional staffers), I'll elect to sit in the back. However, I've had Senator Dornenberger and the president of U.S.Gypsum as seatmates. They were both good talkers -- made the flights go fast.  Smile

What anual mileage would an airline like AA or UAL use as a good reason for "automatic" upgrades...or priority handling, or how to call the special treatment?

Which transatlantic airline my be seen as the most generous? (just with maybe and if only........not meant as a discussion starter about upgrade policies or so...i do not need that, but when i can get it...here i am...)

Never, can't afford it at all. I have been upgraded to Economy Plus on UA, but that's as close as I've gotten.

Commuted for 7 years almost everytime in F class between JFK-GIG (767) and JFK-GRU-GIG (777).For that long of a flight or say on a trans-con Ill try to take F, and for shorter flights Ill just go in coach providing that its not a full flight.Usually though I like to non-rev in the back on empty flights and have as much room as possible.

Most of the time I travel I am in Business and sometimes upgraded to First. Occassionaly short haul I fly Economy and these days I go for economy more often on short regional flights less than 4 hrs.

All my long hauls except one round trip was in Business and many occasions upgraded to First.

I am a fare-payer. Well not me who is forking out the $$, but I travel on a revenue paid ticket.

Never have - put my FF miles towards free tickets vs. upgrades. Then again, with AA making it cheaper, I just might have to...

I've travelled business class in a longhaul flight just once. For some unknown reason, I was upgraded from economy to business. It was on Malaysia Airlines from KUL to LHR in 2000.

It was actually a relief because that was one of the last 744s that was still unequipped with personal tv in economy class. Cannot imagine my 13-hour flight without it!!!

I've been on first class just once, but it was nothing to shout about. I was a 30 mins flight from KUL to Ipoh. Instead of some cookies in economy class we got some sandwiches, big deal....

Next week am due to start NBO/LHR/BKK/SYD/AKL/BNE/SYD/HKK/JNB/NBO - all in first except for the trans Tasmans which only offer J seats. Too many long hauls and too many sleepless nights makes paying for a proper bed worthwhile.

A a non-rev, it would depend on the route and the type of aircraft I will be on. I do the DFW-MIA run on AA quite frequently. I'm more likely to "dress out" better if I am going to try for a first class seat on a 777 vs MD-80. I paid the extra service charges once and flew Business Class from AA), Japan">NRT-DFW on one of AA's MD-11's, worth every penny.

As a CO Platinum, I see F probably 90% of the time not including ERJ flights.

Cadet93, do you really get complimetary BF upgrades? That's pretty amazing, it's an awesome product. Rarely as a Platinum to I get op-upgraded to BF, I usually travel on awards or have my company pay for BF when I'm traveling long haul, which is fairly often.

I like to pay as little as possible for my fares - and I wouldn't travel in business or first even if I was a billionnaire. It is, in my opinion, an unnecessary and avoidable waste of money. I'd rather travel 10 times in economy for the price of one trip. That, to me, is far, far better value.

As a non-rev I have flown F/C many times but it is a lot harder now. With the free upgrades they are giving medallion frequent fliers, it is almost impossible to get up front unless it is the first flight of the morning. I looked up a flight a couple days ago out of BWI and the computer showed 23 pax checked in for 24 F/C seats. The upgrade list had 30 names on it! That means there were 30 medallions fighting for one F/C seat. On the plus side, I have not gotten bumped off a flight in a while.

On international flights I have been very very lucky. I have always been able get seated in business class. They usually oversell economy then move people to business. So I either get business or nothing at all.

I fly up front as often as I can, being CO Platinum Elite, I am upgraded most of the time on domestic flights (the new confirguation 757-300 that CO is flying on the EWR-FLL route, a route that I fly often, is a problem.......only 12 F seats!) Regarding overseas flights, CO does NOT upgrade to Business First on a complimentery basis (someone said that they did in an earlier post) even for its very best customers, unless there is a severe overbooking situation or an aircraft swap or something like that.....in over 30 overseas flights on CO in the past couple years, only twice was I upgraded (one case: overbooking - 40 seats short in economy, all gold and platinum elites went up front, second case: 757 swapped for a 762 on a last minute basis, chaos in re-assigning seats, BF was rather empty and as a platinum member the gate agent upgraded me.) I also use my CO miles on free Business First tickets.

On very long haul flights, I will spend the extra money to sit up front.....on flights like Europe to Australia, its well worth the investment, and with some reasearch, special fares are available, even in the premium cabins.

I only fly in F or C if I get an upgrade or when my company pays, but sometimes, when it is a long flight, I also buy ID tix for C.

Just to be honest, I've never flown first class so far. Only economy for me and since I am a student and don't fly that often anyway, that will be out of reach for me in the next few years. Maybe later in my life  Wink/being sarcastic

Flying Non-rev in FC from PHX to SEA is pretty difficult on AS and HP. But I did get a chance to fly FC from SEA to LAS but flew coach on LAS to PHX.

About 3/4 of the time I upgrade. I travel a lot on business and the upgrades come easy I prefer to fly out a day ahead for my meetings so I take the evening flights which are often less crowded.

Sometimes I get stuck with transcontinental red-eyes If going from west to East Coast USA. I've bought a few business class tickets my company allows that for transoceanic flights.

Recently Delta (my usual choice) has been making many 737 and MD-80 routes into CRJ routes. I hate the CRJs. . . Because you have to pay for beer & booze in Economy and you have to wait for the drink cart to come over.

But you can drink as soon as you board in First!

membership has its privileges. . .

My advice get a job where you don't have to make a living by constantly travelling.

And I wish that Delta would carry better beer on board they have good beer in the Crown rooms but often have crap beers on board the aircraft. . . What gives?

Quite often--

Although I am a college student, I travel overseas to go home twice or thrice a year. My father's company pays for business class travel for me, and about 90% of the time I get upgraded to first for free at the counter.
