Did You Know United Flew To Rome?

Sun Jan 23, 2000 10:43 am

I know I have been posting like crazy tonight but during my search for the New Orleans International service question, I found that United used to fly to Rome from Milan with 727's and they also flew to Athens from CDG with 727's. they also flew to hamburg and a few other places they no longer serve I never knew this so I thought I might share it.

Are you sure?

I thought only PanAm and TWA operated intra-European 727's...besides at this point (I assume you're talking about the early 1980's) UA didn't have traffic rights.

What is your source?

My source was a United 1993 timetable.

sounds like a code share service they once had,TWA and DELTA were the only U.S,carriers to have intra european traffic rights at that time I believe.

I'm not sure about ROM with the 727, but I do distinctly remember they DID in fact go from CDG to Athens at one time. I remember them anouncing that they discontinued it.

It's True!

I have an old UA Hemispheres mag from 1993, and the route map shows a bunch of intra-europe flying, with LHR being a main euro-hub with flights ot hamburg, berlin, munich, rome, etc. Paris was a mini-hub with flights to rome, and even geneva and athens!
This was not a code-share service because it was before UA tied up with LH, and it seems logical because of UA's purchase of Pan Am's LHR assets (including intra-europe rights).
I wonder if UA still has these rights (maybe they are dormant?)
Also, UA flew 767s from IAD-ROM-MXP-IAD, but truncated this service in 97/98? and now only flies IAD-MXP-IAD.
no wire hangers!
