Historical Day For The DC-10 And Those Who Love It

Fri Feb 20, 2004 10:10 am

36 years ago today, American Airlines placed the launch order for 50 DC-10s. 25 firm orders and options for 25 more.

The DC-10----- next to Concorde, the greatest looking airliner ever produced (IMHO)

I tend to agree with you, CopperOne. American ended up operating between 64 & 67 DC-10s. Even today I'm still trying to find a accurate count for AA's DC-10 fleet. I do know for a fact AA bought/operated 35 first-tier DC-10-10s...the balance being pre-owned. Personally, and this before the 777 was introduced... I think the DC-10 was 'the' flagship aircraft for American. To this day, the DC-10 is still a majestic bird. Regards.

ps - operating wise...out of the US carriers...who operated the most DC-10? i'm thinking either AA or NW...UA may be right behind them...

Im glad I can still fly the 10 trans-pacific on NW and Omni. I miss seeing all those 10's at HNL. Now, you see mostly 767's,777's, and 757's.  Crying

I celebrated by fueling some Fed Ex DC-10s. One of them got the single point twice!

When booking my flight from Singapore to Los Angeles last year, I was going to booking just about any airline except Northwest Airlines . . . until I realised that NW operates a DC-10 between Singapore and Tokyo-Narita. I flew NW for the first time.

And in the process, my love for the DC-10 was re-affirmed and I truly enjoyed the inflight service on three out of four sectors.

Only regret is I've only fly the DC-10s of four airlines - Japan Airlines, Garuda, Malaysia AL and Northwest Airlines.
