L H R Terminal 5 - Which Airlines?

Fri Feb 20, 2004 4:01 pm

I was just reading a seperate thread which mentioned Terminal 5 @ LHR. I am aware that all BA operations will move to this terminal, but have a couple of other questions related to this issue:

- Will the other Oneworld members and/or codeshare partners be moving to T5, such as IB/AY/AA/JL/CX/SN etc....?

- Also, how will the other terminals be utilised once BA have vacated T1 & T4?
Will there be a one-terminal operation for all Star Alliance carriers?

Any info would be appreciated..!

Will terminal 5 be big enough to handle ALL Oneworld opps when BA is there?

Qantas is a dead cert to move in with BA as they already use terminal 4 with them and all check-in, lounge and ground handling is done by BA.

With the new codeshare AA is a likely candidate to move in the facilitate smooth transfers. Swiss and IB will by then both be carrying the BA code on all their flights out of LHR but do not currently operate from the same terminal, I don't know whether this is due to lack of space at terminal 1/4.

It all depends on the amount of free space in T5 once all BA opps are in. If there is sufficient room then BA will naturally push to bring their codeshare partners under the same roof.

It is rumoured internally at least at IB that BA are going to takeover the whole operation with a move to Terminal 1 - only five staff remain there, with the thirteen remaining operations staff and others having been made redundant at the end of November.

There is little doubt that they'll all settle in, nice and cosy, in T5 once it's done. But I wonder what'll happen to the freed space? Or perhaps it'll just be less cramped than before!

Makes sense for IB to move to T1, and for BA to take over ground handling - the 2 operate codeshares each on the others flights to Spain and beyond, its very confusing to have to tell pax that for BA flights to Spain ops by BA, go to T1, but if its ops IB then go to T2 - confusion reigns ! I'm sure IB do most of the ground work for BA at the various airports in Spain.

Star Alliance is in negotiation with a couple of airports that I know of to provide one terminal for all their members.
LHR - T3
CDG - T1

LHR - T3 for Star ? Euwuwwuw - worst terminal at LHR, even worse than T1, its a dump. Lets hope they are negotiating for a SERIOUS face lift ie. blowing it up and starting again.

JGPH1A, T3 at LHR has just been renovated, and its now much nicer than it was.

I somehow doubt that T3 is suited for star though, as there are lots of widebody gates needed for longhaulers, and lounges in place with many airlines. It would be an ineffecient use of space to fill these with BMI A320's etc

I wish they could blow it up... here's a thought... Star moves to T4...blows up T3 builds new T3 then moves back in...LOL  Smile

But seriously, their reasoning is consolidation and ease of connex. etc for their pax. Plus maybe to build a massive new Star Lounge etc.

Richard28. Even after renovation LHR T3 is still a dump. Been working in the industry more than 25years, travelled round the world many, many times and LHR T3 is the worst major international terminal in the world. BAA Plc and it's shareholders should hold their heads in shame. Broken doors, torn carpets, burst seats, leaking roofs, no hot water, missing ceiling tiles, missing floor tiles, faulty monitors, ridiculous rents and charges, the list could go on and on. Any industry employee who works in LHR T3 or airline passenger using the terminal will know what I mean. JGPH1A is right. Demolish & start again. I wonder how long it will take for T5 to fall into disrepair after it opens.

It would be great if all of AA's flights could move to T5. I just wish they could move all of their flights to LHR! I'm just dying for a non-stop DFW-LHR, but until that damn Bermuda agreement gets amended, it's not gonna happen.

Richard28 - I hate to break this to you, I passed through T3 last month, it was still a dump. BAA's idea of refurbishment is installing a few more Sock Shops and Tie Racks in any areas that still have windows, to ensure the minimum amount of natural light enters the building - natural light causes terrible wear and tear on the cheap nylon carpet and dodgy cement that seems to be holding that building together.

JGPH1A & Highlander I bow to your wisdom.

With T5 opeining in one go in 2008 I'd have thought there would be scope for BAA to embark on serious rennonavtion of the central terminal area and T4. If BAA were really serious SK could move to T1 and all L/H to T4 in 2008 and T3 could have some serious work done on it. Even T2 operations could shift into T1 (BA operation is big there, so will be pretty empty when it moves out) and T2 & T3 could be worked on at once!

Separately I'd figure VS and/or SkyTeam could both fancy T4 as there LHR home post 2008.

Guess will have to wait and see what BAA has planned - and it better have something serious in mind with a brand new terminal to compare against the others. The opportunity is there in 2008 to undertake some serious work on the old terminals before trying to fill them, settle airlines in new groupings, etc.
