Canjet Announces YYZ To MDW!

Sat Feb 21, 2004 1:15 am

Starting on June 4th, Canjet will commence flights from Toronto to Chicago Midway airport! This is really interesting news, as it looks like Canjet is meneuvering around Westjet. They were quick to jump into Hamilton Airport when Westjet announced they were cutting operations there, plus they are now starting trans-border flights in a business market. Once again, this year has barely begun, but it is proving to be incredibly interesting.

Let the transborder low-fare revolution begin. LCC flights between large US and Canadian business centers are long, long overdue.

Interesting that it's the small Canadian LCC's, not WestJet, that are so far entering the high-density northern/ midwestern US business centers. JetsGo serves Newark. WestJet is playing it safe with their first round of upcoming transborder flights by flying only to southern US sun-spots. And that's something Air Transat, etc., already do. Yes, WestJet is going to serve LAX which is a business center, but it's still a big tourist route.

Whatever LCC (US or Canadian) enters routes such as YYZ-BWI, YYZ-PHL, YUL-BOS, YUL-BWI, YVR-BWI, YVR-EWR, will probably do extremely well.

Excellent route for Canjet IMHO.
A nice entry into the profitable business market between the GTA and Chicagoland.

I believe Canadian Airlines served this route shortly in the mid-90s.

I think that LLC would be just as succesful out of smaller secondary airports depending on the catchment area though.

DCA-ROCguy,

Is there really that much of a market out of BWI? That's nice to hear. I was always under the impression BWI was a declining market.

Yes CP did indeed fly YYZ-MDW in the early 90s before they were granted slots into ORD. BWI used to be served from YYZ, YOW and YUL on US. Now it's relegated to Jazz from YYZ. YOW and YUL's business shifted to DCA and/or IAD. More great news for CanJet.

Way to go Canjet.
Wow interesting to see they are doing this. Funny thing is that you hardly hear anything from Canjet. Then out of the blue Planes being ordered then hush hush again now they talk about going into newer markets. I wish them all the best.

This is great news for MDW. When I saw this, I almost fell out of my chair. This route should give people another another choice of flying into Canada. This will bring lowfares for those people who want to travel in Canada from Chicago and reverse. Presently we have UA, AC and AA flying to Canada out Chicago/ORD.

After MX's departure from MDW, CanJet will be the only international airline into MDW. I wish CanJet good luck on this route and hope its profitable. Great choice by CanJet. Twelve flights a week is a lot to start off. I would think that 7 a week would be a good number to start off with. But the people at CanJet know what they are doing.  Big thumbs up  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Will this service be seasonal or will it be year round?

BWI a declining market? Hardly. Only if you are a US Airways FF. WN has a major presence there, and FL is building it into a focus city. BWI has the reputation as the low cost airport in the Baltimore-Washington area.

BWI is now by far the busiest airport in the DC-Baltimore metroglom, largely due to Southwest and AirTran as TOLtommy notes. I figure BWI would likely be the first choice of Canadian LCC's to the region.

DCA is slot-controlled and no international-eligible slots are for sale right now, as far as I know. Dulles is on the far west-end of the region, and BWI sits conveniently between both cities.

And of course, either Southwest or AirTran could decide to start flying transborder routes (or JetBlue at IAD). I haven't read or heard anything though about plans by any of these carriers to start transborder flights. There were rumors here a few months back about JetBlue flying JFK-HAM or JFK-YYZ but JetBlue itself hasn't announced any plans.

Wow, pardon my ignorance. As you say, it may be the next new market served by a Cdn. LCC.

I think one factor will tend to diminish the growth potential of LCC's in the transborder market, though -- that being the overall level of taxes and fees levied on airfares. The typical minimum amount of tax per transborder segment seems to be in the range of $40 U.S.; considering that some of WN's existing fares are even lower than that, travelers would pay more in tax than airfare on some itineraries. I do realize this is already a problem for the Canadian LCC's especially, but I believe it will ultimately limit the market somewhat for transborder flying.

Speaking of LCC travel between the US and Canada, we're still waiting for an announcement by Jetblue, who is well known to be interested in the YYZ market. Would be nice to see others also start flying here as well.

about JetBlue flying JFK-HAM or JFK-YYZ

Um, that should read JFK-YHM or JFK-YYZ. I meant Hamilton, Ontario not Hamburg, Germany.

If the taxes on transborder flights are that high, I would not be surprised to see a lobbying effort by low-fare carriers to have them lowered. Who charges what amount of tax, by what means? There's a huge amount of business potential that lower taxes on transborder flights could encourage. It would benefit incumbent network carriers too, I would think.

I guess that throws the rumour that Canjet was looking at Rockford, Illinois (according to yyznews.com) as an alternative to Chicago out the window. Way to go Canjet. I guess U.S. bound passengers would pre-clear customs in Toronto (?).

I would like to CanJet possibly add seasonal service from MDW to YHZ. As it is now, traveling from the Midwest to YHZ involves connecting at YYZ, YOW, YUL, BOS, or one of the New York airports.

Didn't ValueJet have flights from IAD to Montreal for a short period of time?

WS is also looking at EWR and MDW. Nothing definite on that.

Why would they have to preclear at YYZ? MDW has intl arr area, since they get the ATA flights from Mex,Caribbean, etc.

Did not know MX was leaving MDW, but good riddance.

That's great news! All transborder tickets are overpriced IMHO, and it's about time we got some LC alternatives. Tired of driving down to SEA.

They left last year. Why good riddance?

Good to see an international airline at MDW again...

I have a question...which aircraft will CanJet use for this route? Doesn't CanJet only have six 737-200s? I don't think this is enough will all the expansion they are doing lately. Have they aquired more aircrafts?

Thanks

Chris, one 737-500 is joining the fleet soon. As far as I know, it will be interchangeable with the 200's in the fleet due to having the same seating capacity.

"Why would they have to preclear at YYZ?"

Pre-customs clearence at the airport of departure (offered in Canada at the major airports - you basically "enter" the USA while still on Canadian soil) saves an IMMENSE amount of time. Pre-customs at departure typically has more manageable lines, and allows the flight to techincally be "domestic". That way, less hassle arriving in the USA for crew, aircraft and especially passengers.
buhh bye

SprxflySWA,

In total 7 airports in Canada have US preclearance facilities. Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

My first two reactions to this thread were: "Oh My God" and "That's Great"

I would like to know the schedule of Canjet's YYZ-ORD. Hopefully they have nice slot for their flights. Anyone can provide such information? Thanks

The press release says two flights per day on weekdays and one flight per day on weekends. And the flights are to MDW, and not ORD. I don't have any other info, sorry. Hope that helps!
