A Flybe Dash-8 Leaving Toronto - Why?

Sat Feb 21, 2004 3:57 am

Hi guys.

Last week I was listening to my scanner and I heard a pilot check in with ATC as he was climbing through 1,200 feet for 2,000 feet. He just took off from runway 15 at Toronto's Downsview Airport (YZD) and was using the callsign "De Havilland Eight". He was instructed to turn left to a heading of 090 degrees and maintain 3,000 feet.

I knew he was going to be flying right past my home in about 3 minutes, so I went outside to get a good look at him. To my surprise, it was a Dash-8 400 in the full colours of Flybe airlines.

This is what I saw .................

My question is, does the De Havilland Canada plant at Downsview have a paint shop?

Hi guys.

I forgot to mention that the reason why I'm wondering whether or not the De Havilland plant at Downsview has a paint shop is because almost all of the Dash-8's I see flying out of YZD are still only in "primer green" colours.

So, I'm wondering, if the Flybe Dash-8-400 I saw wasn't painted at Downsview , then why was it here? Would it have flown all the way over here to Toronto for some kind of maintenance work that couldn't be done in Europe?

Here's 2 photos of the same Tyrolean Airways Dash-8-400. In the first shot you can see that it hasn't been painted in the Tyrolean colours yet while it's on the ramp at Downsview waiting to be delivered to Austria. In the second shot, it's in full colours in Europe.

If the Tyrolean Airways Dash-8 was delivered from Downsview unpainted, wouldn't the Flybe Dash-8 have done the same? Thus the question ..... Why was the Flybe Dash-8 here in full colours?

PS, I'm sorry for the second post, my edit button doesn't work for some strange reason!

Chris,

I have seen, and photographed, many new Dash 8s fully painted in the liveries of overseas airlines at YYZ. I'm not sure if they get painted at YYZ or YZD.

Hello Olympus69.

Thanks for your reply.

OK, well they're obviously being painted in their final colours somewhere in Toronto (my bet would be at Downsview Big grin ), so it must depend on the customer's order, as to whether or not they're painted over here or over there.

After reading your post, I remembered that I've seen Dash-8-4's on a few occasions that were fully painted in Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) colours flying out of Downsview.
I've also seen "The Quiet One" Dash-8 200 & 300 prototypes flying over Toronto.

I wish I knew where they were being painted so I could try to check out the facility.

One time, I was sitting in my garden, at home, in Windsor Ontario, and all the planes landing on Runway 25 at YQG, fly over my parent's house. I saw one day a SAS Dash 8... i found it rather strange... usually the Air Ontario Dash 8-300/100 fly there...  Smile
