Will Be Flying Air India JFK-LHR

Sat Feb 21, 2004 12:52 pm

Hello everyone,

I will be flying Air India from JFK to LHR next month. I have never flown AI before and a bit nervous to be honest! Can you tell me about AI's service on board and what their seatings are like? The food etc? I would love for you to share your experiance with me esp. your experiance on this route, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks!

Why are you nervous?
Are you afraid to be in an indian restaurant? Afraid to be on an airplane? Afraid of women in sarees?
If not, then Air India is an Indian restaurant with wings staffed by FAs in sarees. In Economy you will be plied with free drinks, better legroom than the competition, and a plump 40-something FA in a saree offering you a choice of Indian or Western meals. The 744s in Y class look worn and tired and there are no PTVs, but I reckon you are flying AI for the price. If you get upgraded to Business Class, then AI are very good.

i think Pacificflyer , like most travellers , just needs a bit of reassurance as Air India doesn't have a reputation as solid as other major long-haul carriers. with utmost respect, that statement of yours sounds very condescending , in reply to such an innocent query !

They ran over 30 hours late when I flew with them.

The upside: if you ask for a beer, they will bring you two! They endeared themselves to me on that point and the food is pretty good.

I flew this route last april.

The pros were : fast check in, flights on time, generous complimentary beverages, Good Food and better than expected IFE.

The Disadvantages were: dirty and worn aircraft (744), Stroppy and miserable FA's (strangely enough on both flights the Female FA's were the miserable ones whilst the male stewards were professional).

Its an experience.
next flights : BD LHR-TXL J, FR SXF-STN Y, SN BRU-LHR Y, MA LHR-BUD Y, BA BUD-LHR J, BA LCY-SNN-JFK J, BA JFK-LHR J, BA

Well, they're just as safe as all the other carriers that ply the atlantic. The airline last had a fatal aircrash in 1985 (a terrorist attack) and that only because Canadian security agents did a sloppy job in screening pax and baggage. As I said, their Y class is shop worn, and needs a MAJOR overhaul, but most transatlantic pax on AI fly them for the price and you get what you pay for. They aint BA by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd fly them over Virgin in Y class any day (in spite of Virgin's 200 A/V channels and flashy image) as Virgin's Y class is designed for midgets.

I have flown on AI 747s from JFK-BOM-JFK many times. Other than once having a mechanical delay for almost a day in DEL, I've not had a negative experience with them. That was a little over 20 years ago and they put up all the pax at hotels.

I know that every time I have looked at NYC-LHR flights, Air India is certainly one of the cheapest, but never the cheapest. VS amazingly is frequently cheaper (and more so on their site).

On a side note, when I was travelling in December, one flight was cancelled, and then another and on top of that, they over booked...

I've never flown AI so I cant comment on their inflight service, however, I see their planes everyday at JFK and the only advice I have for you, if u choose them, is to call ahead on the day of your flight and find out if it is on schedule. They are notoriously late, sometimes arriving at JFK at the same time the outbound flight is scheduled to depart. I believe they are usually due in from London/Bombay at 355pm with a 4 hour turn around and a 730pm departure to LHR/BOM. It is not uncommon to have the inbound flight arriving at 7pm and sometimes even 8pm, so just do yourself a favor and call ahead.
