Mexicana And Aeromexico Discountinued Routes

Sat Feb 21, 2004 2:34 pm

I only remember from the mid-80's to date about Mexicana's and Aeromexico's discountinued routes:
AM:
Bogota, Caracas, Montreal, Toronto, Frankfurt, Rome, Tampico, Lima

MX:
Harlingen, DFW, Seattle, Baltimore, Philadelphia, JKF

Do you know which other destinations used to be served by these carriers in their entire history? I am just curious. Recently I saw a very old photo of AM in Ciudad Valles, SLP in Mexico and I didn't know they had an airport back in the 60-70's. This brought my curiousity to know what destinations were at once served.

AM used to fly to TUS from both Guaymas and Hermosillo with DC9-80s before hte routes were taken over by Aero Littoral.

AM777,

Are the internatonal routes you listed operated on a AM flight or codeshare? PBC was always flown on codeshare using Aeromar planes. I hope you are not counting the Lan Chile codeshare to Buenos Aires (via SCL). So is AM still flying on their own? I thought they were using Taca Peru as codeshare.

No, all the flights were operated by AM planes, the route to EZE was flown in the 70's with DC8, and briefly in the early 90´s with DC-10. About PBC, and Uruapan they were operated by DC9 in mid 80´s. AM code share with TACA Peru but they still fly 4x week with 757.

I believe Mexicana also operated a MIA-SDQ flight that was also discontinued. And MEX-SJU has been discontinued a couple of times, at one time the flight operated MEX-CUN-SJU.

AM indeed discontinued the MX), Mexico">MEX-CUN-MSY route. Now AM is sadly absent from MSY.

In connection with New York City, I recall having read here that MX used to fly to JFK and AM to EWR so they simply switched destinations. Is that correct?

Also, did the MX flight to SDQ originate in MIA or in CUN?
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Am777:

Are you sure AM flew to BUE in the early 90's? Also, I don't think AM has never flown to Puebla (PBC) with DC-9.

EddieDude:

Aeromexico has flown to JFK since 1959 or something, when they started flying to the then called Ildewild Airport with Bristol Britannia turboprops.

MX indeed used to fly to JFK, but later switched to Newark.

Yes I´m sure they had flights to EZE, even I saw an AM plane in EZE back in 1993, also I have a timetable. About PBC they operated DC9-15 to GDL and probably MTY.

I remember that AeroCalfornia was the sole operator of the GDL-PBC route and Aeromar MX), Mexico">MEX-PBC, PBC-MTY. AM used to operate the ACA-TLC-MTY.

Also, I forgot, when I lived in Tampico back in 1984, MX used to fly 727 MX), Mexico">MEX-TAM-MTY and back.

Also the discountined flights to/from DFW with stops (direct flights):
MX), Mexico">MEX-ACA-DFW
MX), Mexico">MEX-MTY-DFW
MX), Mexico">MEX-CUN-DFW
MX), Mexico">MEX-MID-CZM-DFW
MX), Mexico">MEX-ZIH-ZLO-DFW
MX), Mexico">MEX-PVR-DFW
MX), Mexico">MEX-GDL-MX), Mexico">MEX
MX), Mexico">MEX-GDL-MZT-MTY-DFW
MX), Mexico">MEX-MZT-DFW (not very sure)
and of course the non-stop flight MX), Mexico">MEX-DFW discountinued in 1986 and re-instated in 1992 and terminated in early 1993 (all DFW services).

I used most of those routes except the ACA route and the long GDL-MZT-MTY (I wish I had time to do that one, must have been a fun one).

Also AM used to do DC10 MX), Mexico">MEX-MIA-MAD-ORY (before they switched to CDG).

How long ago did Mexicana drop SJU?

I remember when seeing their check-in area when I used to travel SJU-US during the summers in the 90's and I think I remember seeing a MX), Mexico">MEX-SJU or vice versa on the MX website some while ago.

Anyone has any thoughts on that?

MX also dropped MDW last year (I don't recall which cities in Mexico it flew to/from MDW but not MX), Mexico">MEX definitely). Now MX consolidated all its flights to/from Chicago in ORD.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Isn't there the chance that it was one of the DC-10s that AM tranfered to AeroPeru, when it was a subsidiary and shared a very similar livery? Sorry, but I would be surprised to learn that AM flew to Buenos Aires at any point since the 70's.

AM744

EZE was indeed served by AM in the early-mid 90s. It was flown nonstop 2x a week. It was discontinued along with the FCO and FRA due to 94/95 tequila crisis.

I have an old Escala magazine that I wish I can show you that proves it.

I will repeat I´m sure, they had flights to EZE, first was CUN - EZE, later MEX-CUN-EZE, and finally MEX - EZE nonstop, AM744, if you still have any doubt, I will try to find a timetable of that time to show you. BTW Aeroperu planes had different tail paint.

AM did fly to EZE, although the outbound flight made a short refueling stop in ACA (they couldn't take off with a full load from MEX).

The return flight was EZE-MEX nonstop.

AMX dropped the CEN segment on the TIJ-HMO-CEN-CUL-GDL-MEX 100-101 flight in the late 90's, also flights 102-103 (MEX-GDL-CEN-GDL-MEX). These flights were later switched to 2 flights only, one being CEN-MEX and the other one CEN-LMM-MEX on MD87's (most of the time).

The CEN-HMO route was taken over by AeroLitoral with a daily N/S flight only, as well as CEN-GDL.

AMX also had about 6 years ago a CEN-HMO-LAX, but sadly it didn't last long.

Overall, these movements are due to the fact that HMO was being converted into an AMX hub at the time (and still is).

AM does not currently fly to EZE or to GIG. I don't know if AM used in the past 752's in the MEX-GRU routes but. today, AM uses 762's and, on occasion, the 763.

AM used to fly LAX-MEX-LIM-GRU with the 752 enjoying 5th freedom rights between LIM and GRU thanks to AeroPeru. When AeroPeru was shut down, AM continued to fly the route for about two months until the Peruvian government terminated AM's 5th freedom rights.

Other cities that AM (or should I say, Aeronaves de Mexico) has discontinued over the years within Mexican territory include: Ciudad Mante in Tamaulipas and Navojoa, Sonora. Those were operated until the late 60s - early 70s.

They lost one of their DC-9's on an accident while in flight MX), Mexico">MEX-ZIH.

MX operated flight 802 MX), Mexico">MEX-ACA-MX), Mexico">MEX-ORD The flight number was the same for the MX), Mexico">MEX-ACA and ACA-MX), Mexico">MEX legs.

Flew early 80's MEX-Harlingen so it must have been a nonstop at some point. It was mid-December and terrible weather. Missed-apprached two times with the third one being nasty. Scary angle of attack and roaring engines. Finally circled around for 40 mins. and had a shaky landing. That 727-200ADV earned my respect that day. I'm sorry they are gone, but I'll fly them everyday over a 737.
