United's AMS Operations

I never hear too much discussion about United's AMS operations. How are they doing? Seems like they have 2-3 flights/day and that's about it. Any rumor to them starting DEN-AMS?

why shd they go big in AMS and compete heads on with NW/KL when UA has BD in LHR and LH in FRA?

I've done Dulles to Amsterdam twice in the past six months. Both flights have been nearly full. Sure, KLM and Northwest are dominant, but United and the Star Alliance have a good market to and from Amsterdam, too. Though I don't know how much cargo United is carrying, it looked to me like they were doing well with higher yielding business travellers.

I have been on IAD-AMS a number of times over the years and it always seems that the plane has been full, full in all classes.
In addition, I overheard a conversation at the gate at IAD one time when a CSA was telling another CSA that IAD-AMS is one of the most profitable in the entire UA system. I also believe that the cargo loads do quite, quite well just with the flowers that go back and forth.

UA is much cheaper then KL/NW on the AMS - Washington flight. My parents are flying UA all the time. Guess 20 times a year or so.

I would be suprised if IAD-AMS is one of the most profitable in the United system without the cargo. UA is one of the cheapest ex AMS to the US (only US beats UA). Moreover they have some very interesting C-class offers every few months which sometimes makes you wonder why one wants to fly economy. However the cargo probably generates a lot of money to make good money on AMS (which seems to be the reason why DL and US are also making $$$ at AMS). And yes flowers is a money maker for United just as it generates a lot of cash for most (if not all) airlines at AMS.

Seems like they have 2-3 flights/day and that's about it.

United is not going to increase flights next summer. They keep on flying the B777 to IAD and the B767 to ORD.

Word is that they are going to pull out of AMS. I flew both the IAD-AMS and ORD-AMS. I wouldn't say that they were booked but they were full enough to be making a good profet per flight. The a/c they chose were pretty bad the ORD-AMS, we had the old logo jet, I hope that when they gave it some new colors that they gave it an overhaul, it was loud, things wern't working, but I'm pretty sure that they had ptv's. I flew both coach and business the 3 times i did that leg and it was ok. But I did hear that they are pulling out of AMS and letting other star alliance people take their spot, and I think that there's only 2 flights, one to/from IAD and 1 from ORD daily. And they ran 777's the IAD and 767's ORD.

It's long been rumored US would tag PHL-AMS as season or outright cancel it, but I highly doubt UA will outright cancel both their ORD and IAD flights... if UA's flying a B763 ORD-AMS and B772 IAD-AMS, then one would think they could - at the very least - try a single B763 ORD/IAD-AMS before dumping the services...

I hate to say this, but screw the dang Star Alliance - it's mostly a marketing program to attract a group of flyers to a group of airlines. I hope you don't really think that if, say SQ inaugurated ORD/IAD-AMS-SIN service, UA would make money off the service by placing their code on SQ...

And I hate it when people declare specific routes 'XX's most profitable' with nothing to back it up w/ other than XX is their favorite airline and the route is the one they like the most...

Which "Star Alliance" partner are you referring to? SQ pulled out in 2001 and currently there isn't any other airline flying IAD-AMS besides NWA/KLM. The same almost applies to AMS-ORD (with the exception of a few KU flights). KLM would be very pleased if UA left AMS....

I hope you don't really think that if, say SQ inaugurated ORD/IAD-AMS-SIN service, UA would make money off the service by placing their code on SQ...

True, if SQ would start SIN-AMS-ORD again (which they don't) they wouldn't put a UA flightnumber on their flights (and why would they? They can fill their planes without UA)

UA flies many Transfer passengers via AMS, and offers many codeshares via AMS. Most flights will carry a full load of passengers onboard UA.

It always amazes when such inconsistent info appears.......one post states that the AMS routes are among the most profitable in the UA network and another says that UA is stopping sevice to AMS.

There is no reason to believe that UA is going to discontinue sevice to AMS - the IAD flight operated with a 777 has been a good perfomer for many years and the ORD flight with the 763 also seems to be doing OK. Its true that UA does offer some very sharp fares out of AMS, but they have done that for years, especially during the low season.

Dutchjet ---- good points! Responses come from all over the board, you need to think about what's right and what's wrong.

Any reason why UA doesn't offer flights to AMS from LAX/SFO/DEN?

UA nonstop service out of AMS to other US cities is very unlikely - Denver or San Francisco would be the obvious choices as UA hubs - but O & D traffic between AMS and those cities does not warrant new or additional nonstop service, easy connections are available from SFO and DIA to AMS via either ORD or IAD or Star connections in FRA, and most UA cities offer connections to AMS via ORD or IAD, so I do not see any additional UA routes out of AMS in the future. KL/NW (now plus CO plus Skyteam) makes AMS a difficult airport to compete at - the dutch (especially dutch travel agents) tend to be loyal to KLM and AMS's greatest strength is in the availability of connections in a rather user-friendly airport. AA, for example, has proposed flying to AMS on more than one occassion, yet never opened service to Schipol.

I think a UA AMS-SFO summer seasonal 763 service would work.

Well, considering UA only has one long-haul plane painted in the new livery, all planes in the fleet are now the "old logo jet."
