Tokyo Narita is pretty good also.
It has an outdoor roof area open to public. But you should be a real 747 fan.

If you want to see a lot of airlines and have a good spotting place, I think that FRA is one of the best airports.

Stateside, DFW has one of the best places (Founder's Plaza) to view aircraft but there is one HUGE problem... NOTHING TO LOOK AT!!!! Unless you like seeing ten MD-80/90s to every CRJ. There is an OCCAISIONAL heavy (few and far between).

How about AMS. There is just something in the sentence: '...No Fences...' that has a nice sound to me.

Several airports in Japan offer excellent viewing--including active runways--from observation decks right in the terminal, and are therefore very welcoming to airplane enthusiasts. I particularly enjoyed NRT, FUK, and OKA for this reason.

As far as airports ive been to id have to say TPA offers some of the best veiws of movements ive seen.Top of the main parking deck offers 360 degree view of most gates and all runways, you might not see too many exotics but a fairly busy airport with good weather year round,Just one of the best designed airports in my opinion.

For the variety of airliners/airlines:
Sharjah / Dubai
but closer to most of you: I would say Miami

LAX - Lots of good photography locations (Imperial Hill, especially now that I have 400 mm capability, the park at Sepulveda and Lincoln by In-and-Out, plus lots more), Volume, and Variety.

LAX, ORD and LHR out of the ones I have been to. I think an Airliners magazine rated these airports top viewing areas as well a few years ago.

Although LGA has only boring narrow-bodies, the park at the end of one of the runways which is open to the general public (I think it is called Planeview Park) is one of the best spots to watch aircraft approaching and landing. It is a few minutes from my office and you can usually find me eating lunch there in the summer.

I don't want to say that Rio's Santos Dumont is the best one, but it is pretty easy to spot over there and has a beautiful view.  Smokin cool

VERY surprised no one has mentioned DUS, FRA, GVA, ZRH............... and SIN. The first two must easily be within the top 3 or 5 worldwide.

NRT is really cool. has a food court/viewing deck. plus, they have this video game simulator where you can land commerical planes at different airports. i've never seen one like it.

From the airports I've been to, LAX would probably rank the highest.

Pe@rson: DUS lacks heavies and is comparatively boring.

From what I have heard, Dubai is great but I have never been there.

Hello !

In terms of variety, DXB is excellent, but photography is difficult. Outside of the terminal building you will have to find off-airport locations to shoot on approach. Angles are kind of steep, if you look at the photos on airliners.net. On or near the airport premises signs and/or security personnel will tell you that photography is prohibited. From inside Terminal 1 you can take some decent photos through heavily tinted windows. Not advisable if you shoot Kodachrome. Reg spotting is fine from inside Terminal 1's midfield terminal. To check DXB's movements, have a look at this:

http://www.dca.gov.ae/dia_online_services/online_services/flight_information/

It includes freighters + the variety is quite extreme !

Sharjah is super if you have applied for a permit (AED 350.00 = ca. USD 100.00 per day). If you sneek around the fence from the outside, security will not like it and pick you up.

Heathrow is excellent if you like the complete picture and position yourself in the approach area. Only 2 runways are in use, one for landings, one for take-offs. So except for a few minutes around 3pm when they change runways and you have to run from one to the other, you can log and photograph EVERYTHING all day long.

CDG is very nice in terms of variety and nice places, although some have disappeared within the last 2 years. Concorde is gone but exotic African stuff still abounds.

DUS may become a little boring after a while (expecially if you are a resident), but the photographic possibilities are superb. Same goes for MAN. For someone who hasn't been there before, both will be quite an experience, especially during the summer holidays.

Other favorites of mine:
BKK (viewing)
HKG (viewing + photography)
AEP (viewing + photography)
AMS (viewing + photography)
ORY (viewing + photography from the park south of the airport)
ZRH (viewing + photography)
FRA (viewing + photography)
GEY (wonderful scenery, but way off the path...)
LPB (stunning background scenery , few movements)

Best regards,
Heinz

I know DUS lacks heavies - but who cares? Instead of widebodies, it offers a number of nice smaller aircraft, which, in my view, is more exciting. To a German living in DUS, it might be "comparatively boring," but to others it is enjoyable and worthwhile.

I think FNC (Funchal in Madeira Island - Portugal) is a great viewing airport. Check these pics:

The "upperdeck" at the Priority lounge at LHR is a great place to watch movement on the apron and taxiways and to a lesser extend, TOs and landings...
