Odd Looking RB211 On This EA 757-225

Sun Feb 22, 2004 6:38 am

Why do the nacelles on this RB211-engined 757 look odd?

Is it an early version of the Rolls powerplant on the 757?

That was a less powerful version. It was the version available for earlier deliveries. As the more powerful engine became available EA replaced the engines.

I believe the difference was 37,500lbs vs. 40,100lbs approx.

The older one was the -535C if you are looking for variant.
In the Alaska bush I'd rather have a two hour bladder and three hours of gas than vice versa.

Actually,

That was the original style of engine nacelle on the 757 before the decided to duct the whole thing in a common nacelle.

If you look closely this engine nacelle is the same style on the older 747-200s that BA flew as well as the RR powered 747SPs and of course, the L1011.
I think it was just to streamline the engine...because as you can see all RR powered 757s 767s and 747s now have the ducted RR engines....

Anyone know are there any performance or maintenence benefits from having the sort of one-piece nacelle the newer RB211s have (and the CFMs on the A340 as well)? Or is it mostly a cosmetic issue?
