DL 727 Pilots - What Are You Flying Now?

Sun Feb 22, 2004 9:03 am

A friend of mine retired from DL when it phased out the 727. He was a Captain and retired early. He was somewhere around 12 or so on its "seniority list". He had the option of going to the 767 but retired instead. He said the top four or five seniority-wise on the 727 were going to the 777. If you were a 727 pilot or know one, where did you/they go after it was retired?

They scattered to pretty much every airplane Delta flies, depending on what their seniority could hold. The two friends of mine who were 727 FOs in DFW are now on the 88.

That happened at UA and the others when the 727s and 737-200s were retired. Seniority is the predominant factor in transfers and assignments. Many were quite young, compared to me anyway, and with their seniority, probably moved to the A320, 733/5, or the 757. A fleet type's retirement does not mean that the pilots are to be retired also; the seniority # you get when hired is the sole criterion for determining who stays and who goes.

My dad went to the 757/767-domestic (Capt) after he was done with the 727 (Capt). Then he went to flying 777 (FO), then L-1011 (Capt), then 767-300ER Intl (Capt), and now he's on the 767-400 (Capt). He never flew the MD-88.

What became of the AA pilots who flew the 727 before AA completely retired the fleet? What about the pilots of Continental's 727s? Of TWA's? (before TWA was bought out by AA)

The pilot's seniority dictates where they went to. I know two 727 Capts who went MD-88 Capt, and one who went 738 Capt, and another who's a 764ER Capt. Just depends on where they wanted to go, and where their rank would fall into.
