Ever Take A Flight Just To Get The Miles?

Sun Feb 22, 2004 10:15 am

Just like the topic says, have you ever taken a flight just to get the miles?

Sometimes I'll choose a longer route to get more flight miles, what about you?

Ord747Cle, yeah. I once flew TRF-AMS-DTW-MSP instead of TRF-AMS-MSP. Both for more miles, but also to try KLM MD11 instead of NW DC10

NW Used to fly from ALB to NYC in the 1990 s, and as a NW FFP member, I flew ALB/DTW/LGA for the miles! A long trip, but many more miles than the ALB/LGA 126!!

You bet. Flying BUF-IAD-PHL-BWI-PIT-IAD-BUF with a 90 min turnaround @ BWI.

Can't beat flying that on a $78+ fare. Thats the shortest route on the fare routings, too.

When CO still flew from CAK, I used to connect thru CLE all the time. Extra 500 miles, and an extra segment both ways. Made it easy to maintain elite status, back when CO elite status meant something!

Yes, from time to time.  Smile

One of these trips is coming up in May: DUS-FCO-VCE-MXP-DUS with AZ: 4000 more miles for my Frequence Plus account for just 129 Euro.

I am also doing these tours out of enthusiasm - in the above mentioned case, it will be my first flights on AZ and my first visits to FCO, VCE and MXP.

of course-

But I did it for tier points, not miles--mid dec 2003, VS 010 JFK-LHR leaving on Friday night, arrive Saturday morning, return on Sunday VS 003 LHR-JFK

I booked in Premium Economy to get the 6 more tier points to bump me to gold club status before the year ended (for me it was the Monday after I got back)--bonus was being upgraded both ways to Upper Class, and getting a date with a F/A.

So yeah, for the tier points, and the date. HAHA.

If I've got a chance at achieving elite status, sure -- but I won't go out of my way for an extra 200 or 300 miles, it's just not worth it.

Most airlines have a minimum 500-mile segment that makes it worth your while to take short connecting flights. For example, I live in AUS and fly to DCA often. AUS to DFW will give me 500 miles, and DFW-DCA will give me 1192 for a total of 1692. Flying a longer routing through ORD will give me 973 for AUS-ORD, and 612 for ORD-DCA, for a total of 1585. Of course, this could differ depending on the city pair, but I try not to worry about it too much.

In the times of Swissair, I used to fly TUN-ZRH-GVA-ZRH-TUN and not the direct TUN-GVA-TUN, to get more miles and also to fly more aircraft. The prices were the same. Last October, I have been to Vienna and I chose TUN-MXP-VIE-MXP-TUN with AZ instead of TUN-VIE-TUN with TU to get more miles.
Next flights : BRU-ZRH-CAI (LX)/ BRU-FCO-TLV (AZ)

A few times I would fly out of EFD up to IAH in Houston to get the 500 extra miles, plus it was free.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Sadly it is going away.

Only once.
I flew SCL-MDZ and stayed 3 days in Mendoza for avoiding my LanPass kilometres to expire.(Well, it also gave me some extra 1600 kms.)

I'm with you AWACS...I've done the EFD run for extra miles several times. I will miss it...

Although in retrospect my fingers still hurt from gripping the armrests on a particularly bumpy EMB-120 ride into IAH. Why fly above a storm when you can fly through it?

I think it was 88, but NW was having one of those rare double your miles deals for a limited time. So for $112.00 I did LAN-DTW-MDW-DTW-CLE. Next day was CLE-DTW-MDW-DTW-LAN. All flights were on various models of ....you guessed it, the DC 9. The hotel room in CLE was free...friends in low places come in handy. With silver bonus and the double dip, it was good for just over 10,000 miles. At that time NW freebees were bracketed at 20,000 miles.

Once I was flying home to Czech Republic from YHZ. I could easily fly YHZ-YUL-PRG on AC+OK.

Instead of that, I did choose routing with AC+OS to get more points with Air Canada Aeroplan. I flew this route: YHZ-YYZ-VIE-PRG and on the way back it was PRG-VIE-LHR-YYZ-YOW-YHZ. Instead of regular 9000 points in economy if I flew first choice, I got more than 15000 in economy on AC+OS. 15k is enough for free short-haul return flight for Air Canada.

I just flew AA EZE-MVD (Montevideo, Uruguay)-EZE to qualify for AA Gold. The best part of this mileage run is getting on a B777 for a 28 minute flight!!!

I once sold a ticket to a couple who were each 3600 mile short of the PREMIER EXECUTIVE status with UAL.........Their routing was JFK/LAS in the morning.......A little bit of lunch and Black Jack.....Then home at 5:00 to YES celebrate New Years in Time Square with Dick Clark that evening.

They told me that being a PE was adicting and once you get the staus its hard to give it up.....

Wasting time and money to just get FF miles is VERY stupid. You don't just earn FF miles by flying. There are many other ways to get miles on a daliy/weekly basis.

Hi,

I have just joined up and this is my first post.

I've taken many flights to earn extra miles. As such, i now have Star Alliance 'Gold' Status on the Air Canada 'Aeroplan' scheme.

My next miles collection trip will be:-

Sat 13 March 2004 MAN - IAD (BD701)
Sun 14 March 2004 IAD - MAN (BD702)

Total 7556 miles  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Got a cheap ticket too - £219 inc all taxes (purchased the ticket at flybmi.com)

Thanks

Lee

Every year it seems I end up having to take an extra flight just to go from Silver to Gold. But I think its worth it.

i did a trip a cpl years ago visiting some friends in ORD area and VA/DE area. here was my routing:

PSP - LAX - ORD

ORD - IAD

BWI - ORD - LAX - PSP

the PSP-LAX-ORD route could've been PSP-DEN-ORD and the last day of my trips could have been BWI-LAX-PSP

i did it not just cause i love plane spotting at some of our countries awsome airports to do it BUT i was really close to getting a free ticket w/ my mileage plus  Laugh out loud

FF Miles in and of itself - yes. Miles or segments to get you to some elite status? Those can be quite valuable.

Plus, some of us are airplane addicts and just want to fly more or hit up one more weird airport we'd never go to otherwise.
