SAM,

There are some great spotting places around AMS, and there is also a main observation deck right at the Airport. You can find many interesting airlines flying into AMS, as well as Cargo Aircraft.

you also can check the website of AMS at http://www.schiphol.nl
At AMS you also can find many shops and Restaurants before the security check.

Enjoy your time.

Regards,
AMS

About the airport http://www.schiphol.nl/

BTW note that E, F and G gates are on;y accessible to non-Schengen passengers. B and C gates are, as far as I know, only accessible to non-Schengen passengers if they a) have anything to do in the Schengen area or b) enter the Schengen area via the security checkpoint.

If you're on a spotting trip http://www.schipholview.nl/ . Moreover on the schiphol website you have a timetable and the schedule of next days flights (both freighters and passengers).

Apart from millions of NW and KLM what else.
- Transavia, Martinair, Air Holland/HollandExel
- the usual major European airlines
- some UK low co's (easyJet, Jet2, BMI Baby)
- major US airlines (except American)
- some major Asian airlines
- a few baltic airlines
- a few central asian airlines (Air Astana, Armenian, Air Zena)
- Kenya Airways and if Sierra Leone still flies....
- Varig
- a few cargo airlines (DAS Air, Kalitta Air, Polar, Emirates Cargo, Singapore Cargo, Asiana Cargo, Nippon Cargo, ELAL, JAL Cargo, China Airlines Cargo, China Southern Cargo and Korean)

I don't believe that is the case. When I have flown I was always able to go through the entire terminal. Schengen and non-schengen. No additional security checks or anything!

Also check out...

If you have time, the following aviation store must be one of the largest in the world. It's near Schiphol. Definitely worth a visit:

http://www.lhshop.nl/lhshop.asp

The terminals are great...bright, modern, great views of the planes, lots of shopping...both inside and outside the security area. There's also a small aviation model shop in the Schiphol Plaza shopping area, near the train platforms outside of baggage claim. I've gone from the transit area to the Schengen area...don't think there was a security check but there is a passport control check.
