The more I see the Embraer 170, the more I like it. I remember back in October one of the demonstrator/prototype a/c was @ ATL, and I was like a kid seeing a shiny new toy as it taxied down the taxiway.

Wow. That looks awesome I hope the other majors adopt them. Does the 170 and 190 have any fleet compatibility with the 135 and 145?

How many will they get up and flying before the fold? Just kidding. How many are being delivered this year?

"How many will they get up and flying before the fold?" Good point b/c if US folds that means someone can pick up some brand new ac at a good price. I wonder if that is affecting them selling.

Photos of the Embraer 170 in USAirways Express have been on Airliners.net before, but still a nice looking aircraft. This past week Embraer received its full JAA/FAA Type Certificate and delivery's will begin immediately. Also, last week they rolled out the bigger Embraer 190.........which is just a longer version of the -170.
When Embraer built the EMB-135 concept, they just took a production 145 aircraft and cut out two plugs (one fwd and one aft of the wing) and riveted it back together.

Which carrier is getting these A/C? I'm guessing that US is not. It's got to be one of the following carriers.

Allegheny Airlines, Inc.1
Middletown, Pa.

Colgan Air, Inc.

Actually, none of the above, the first 85 goes to Mid-Atlantic Airways.

The USAirways Embraer 170's are going to 'Main Line'..... but here lies the problem from what I know. Mid Atlantic Airlines, the division that will the 170 is FULLY owned by main line, but the flight crews will NOT fall under the same union contract, and this has caused some rift.

US is in fact taking delivery of these planes into their new MidAtlantic Division, not a regional affiliate(as of now at least)

However, i believe there are talks to send some planes to a regional affiliate, Chautauqua being the likely canidate i think.

Mid-Atlantic Airways is kind of a sub-mainline link to US Airways.. the pilots get paid very low wages (Captains max out around $58K, so it's worse than Mesa). It's quite sad actually, these old US Airways pilots must really be desperate, I wonder why they don't just move on to greener pastures at Southwest, ATA, Airtran, etc.

I think it is so neat to see a RJ (or quasi-RJ, depending on how you look at it) with engines under the wings. I'm used to the engines at the back look for RJ's - I think this looks much more stylish.

Those US Airways furloughs have (had?) upto 15 years seniority at US Air.... and now look what it's got them. Pilots at Mesa make more than they do.

From what I understand, MidAtlantic will be operated by formally furloughed pilots and flight attendants.

Better flying at low salary than no flying at all.

Something to note...the MDA contract was modeled after Eagle. Also...US Airways ALPA accepted it - and they are among the hardest unions to bargin with.

Outstanding Looking Airplane

Mon Feb 23, 2004 1:18 pm

All:

As a flight attendant for Delta Connection, I would love to get a hold of one of the airplanes for a day and just pick it apart. At 6'1 and 230 lbs, I'm getting over the 'cozy cabins' of the CRJ200 and CRJ700 (although the CRJ700 is admittedly better than the CRJ200); I've heard the Embraer170 cabins are considerably more roomy and passenger friendly.

I guess it's too bad that I'm so broke that I'll never be able to avoid an ID75 just to see what it's all about; my wife would kill me if I paid money just to 'see a new toy' and not buy clothes for my daughter who is growing faster than a weed.

Oh well. Maybe fortune will since on me sometime.

What will be the initial routes for the US 170?

I second Yyz717's question, i'm very curious to see if US will restore jet service to some cities that were left with the Dash 8 after the F28s retired... anyone know some routings or plannings?

Cool little jet, Mini-me comes to mind....Seriously, anyone know if/when we will see these at LGA? It's a big station for US Air Express with everything from the ERJs and Dash 8s down to the Beech 1900s of Colgan

Does the 170 and 190 have any fleet compatibility with the 135 and 145?

I don't believe so. If they did, Embraer would be marketing commonality and I personally haven't heard of it. However, the cockpits do have a similar appearance.

145 cockpit:

170 cockpit:

I'm not a real aeronautical engineer, I just play one on Airliners.net.

The Dash-8's are on the way out, they will slowly be phased out over time and replaced with the 170 or various CRJ/ERJ models. Right now US Airways Express has no extra planes at any of the Express carriers for expansion of routes. When a new CRJ/ERJ/170 arrives it takes a current a DASH-8 route and that DASH-8 goes into retirement. It will be about 6-8 months until there are any extra planes to expand the Express routes with unless they speed up the DASH-8 retirements, then it will be longer till there are spares.

Good info there Fresh, since you seem to know what you're talking about, will the jets even replace the Dash 8s on the really short routes like LGA-MDT, PHL-SBY, or BOS-HYA or are they planning something else?

I know that the longer DASH routes will get them first, it also depends a lot on the load factor. I believe that the main goal in the future is to eliminate all turbo props from the Express fleet, so it is possible that those routes will see one of the above mentioned A/C kind at some time, how soon? I have no clue only scheduling knows. I know that they do not want to lose any routes that they currently have on the Express side, as every passenger is important and air service is a necessity for most of the cities so a reduction in service to them will not happen I believe.

YYZ and River-

The first USAirways Express Embraer 170 cities will be PHL-LGA-BNA-CLT-PIT. If you take a look back in 'search' one of our members listed fully the flights they where able to get off of the USAirways Web Site....I'm 99.9% sure these where the cities.

I can say with certainty that a route is EWR-PIT-EWR.
How do I know? Because I'm booked on it on April 5th.

APR05
USAirways Express operated by MidAtlantic Airways 1614
Depart PIT: 5:30pm
Arrive EWR: ~6:50pm

And the trip was a steal- $183

As long as they are operating out of PHL, I'm happy Big grin I'll save my pennies and take a weekend trip somewhere just to get on one of those things.

I've been an ERJ fan since I flew a CO ExpressJet in 2000, PHL-CLE. It was the single most enjoyable flight I've ever been on. Can't wait to see the 170 in service.
