What Airports Have Permanently Closed Runways?

Mon Feb 23, 2004 1:14 pm

OK, the only ones I know DEFINATELY are DCA and ATL.
I think JFK does as well. I believe officially DFW does not, BUT there are closed runways from the old Amon Carter Field that run across parts of DFW. Am I right?

So, who else?  Confused

You are correct. The old Great Southwest Airport's runways were demolished. There is a small piece of the northern section of 17-35 just outside the south entrance to DFW. The rest of that runway is now Amon Carter Blvd.

Runway 18-36 at ORD has been closed for years. It is only used for taxiing.

the shortest runway at YXY (the gravel/dirt strip that runs off twards town instead of the way the other 2 go) is open, but i've been in Whitehorse for 4.5 years now and I'll swear that i have never ever seen a single aircraft on that runway, forget accually taking off/landing on it... Not even a cessna or a heli or nothing. The other 2 runways are paved, the lardger (closest to the terminal too) is used all the time, and the smaller one isnt used much, but in the summer you'll see the odd small aircraft out there...

Miegs Field. Course the airport is closed. And I think DAL's 18/36 is as well, but don't quote me on that.

Beirut International Airport (BEY) permanently closed the old 03/21 and converted it to a taxiway when the new 03/21 opened.

Below is an aerial of the airport. The runway on the far right (the one inland) is runway 03/21. Directly parallel to the left of it is the old runway 03/21 which is now a taxiway.

The new 03/21 is 12,467ft. long (big increase), made of concrete, is HIRL/CL (High Intensity Runway Lighting and Centerline Lighting), and has at least CAT I ILS (I believe it is being upgraded to CAT II or CAT III), it opened in 1998.

The old 03/21 was only 10,433ft. long, made of asphault, was only HIRL (High Intensity Runway Lighting), and didn't have an ILS at all, not even LOC.

DAB. ERAU sits right on top of it. It ended right in front of the library. When I got there in 86 it was our two main parking lots.

JFK has one. It was really short, and I don't know what the numbers were, but it was on my old approach plates. It's in this photo, the bottom left-most taxiway. Doesn't look like a runway anymore, but it used to be one (for small planes, I guess).
Also, there is something that looks suspciously like an ex-runway that goes from the bottom left of the picture out to that trestle that goes out into that bay in the middle of 13R/31L. Anyone know what this is from?

There is of course runway 05-23 at LHR which I don't think is used anymore, especially as there is a concorde parked just off it now. In fact, I think it was in the 80s that I last saw it in use. Can anyone tell my when it was last used and in what cirumstances it would have been used?

Also, since the opening of the new runway 36L-18R (apparently the longest in Europe?) at MAD I think 36R-18L is no longer used. The last time I took off on it was on a very early morning EZY flight to LTN at about 6am when there was almost no traffic. This was in 2001 I think. Of course, MAD is soon to have double parrallel runways and new terminals, so the layout and use will change again.

According to the LHR Yahoo Groups, runway 23 was certainly used early on 27 October 2002 when there very strong cross winds.

They have the following arrivals using it:
07.02 5B-DAX A310
07.09 HS-TGZ B744
07.22 G-YMMB B772
07.37 G-VAIR A340
07.46 ZS-SAU B743

There were flights between this, including Jumbos etc. that were using the normal 27L. I visited later that day and found that 27L and 27R were in use concurrently for landings, which is certainly not the norm for LHR. This is apparently because of windshear off the BA hangars for 27R landers.

I was lucky enough to witness 23 in action back in 1974, again in strong winds.

Ray

Am I correct in thinking that G-BOAB is now parked just adjacent to this runway, which would probably mean that Rwy 23 cannot really be used anymore?

London gatwick, apparently Europe's, if not the worlds, busiest single runway operation airport, does in fact have two runways, one of which is always closed and used as a taxiway. The closed runway is 08L/26R and is only opened when maintenance takes out 08R/26L, or when a very confused pilot lands on the wrong runway, which has happened before now!! An aircraft was taxiing on it at the time and had to vacate immediately on to the grass!

JFK has several runways that have been closed over the past three or four decades. When the place was built in the late 1940s, the plan called for a pinwheel-like system of intersecting runways, somewhat similar to ORD, with the terminal area in the center.

Gradually the non-essential runways were closed. The east-west runway (not sure of the designation) is the one referred to in the earlier post. It once ran right in front of the IAB and Pan Am Worldport and was for many year's the airport's main jet runway. It was closed in the early 1970s to make room for the Worldport expansion and to create additional hardstands at the IAB. You can still discern it in aerial photos, though, and its approach light trestle (on the western end, sticking into Jamaica Bay) is still very much intact.

It looks on a diagram of JFK that the runway referred to by Jsnww81 could have been either 6-24 or 7-25.

RWY 13/31 at Lindbergh Field (SAN) was closed in the late 90s to create room for a badly needed cargo ramp leaving only 9/27 active. It was only about 4,400 feet long and never handled any jets. I did see some Dash-7s use it a couple of times.

At PVD, runway 10-28 (4000 X 100) has been closed for about 20 years, and is now Taxiway November. Runway 5L-23R (4432 X 150) was closed a couple summers ago and is now Taxiway V, which is also used for remote R.O.N. parking for up to 10 757's.

Pick any airport that's been around for more than 30-40 years-- chances are better than even it's closed a runway or two at some point. Remember LHR started with a runway triangle.

JFK started with three runways in 1948: the one that's now 13L (8000 ft then, I think) and the ones that now would be designated 1R (now taxiway F as I recall) and 7R. 1R only lasted a few years-- likely it was closed when they built 4L. 13R was also added in the late 40s-early 50s. The 1950s aerial pics also show would-now-be-called runways 1L and 7L, but these were seemingly held in reserve and AFAIK never put into use. Easy to see where they were.

Runway "7R" was extended to 10000 ft circa 1959? and was closed before 1970-- maybe 1965?

POS in Trinidad has 1 main runway, 10/28. During World War 2 when it was an RAF airfield 2 additional cross runways were built, forming a triangle. After the war ended the use of those two runways fell sharply and so all development was centred on 10/28 (formerly 09/27). For many years the remnants of those 2 runways were visible just north of 10/28 although the southern parts were obliterated by terminal expansions. Now with the new terminal to the north of the runway they are gone completely.

St Lucia's Hewanorra (UVF) and Antigua (ANU) also have closed runways which remain in existence. ANU's second runway is used as parking space for planes while the one at UVF is a roadway. KIN also has an old runway which does not appear to have any use.

Nas has an old runway 5/23 that was closed due to the approach path almost directly in front of the new terminal. It is now used as a taxiway for runway 9

When I lived in Memphis in the '80's, there were two shorter runways at MEM(don't remember the numbers, but one was a NW-SE runway, and the other was a NE-SW) located in the northwest corner of the airport. They were used for general aviation in the early 80's, and closed (I think) in the mid-late 80's.

They've since been eaten by the expansion of the FDX superhub. ISTR that there are a few vestiges of the old runways in the taxiways around the FDX apron, if you know what to look for.
