NY Post: AA777 Returns To JFK; Dumps Fuel

Mon Feb 23, 2004 9:07 pm

Hmm, I cannot seem to find this posted yet (my apologies if it has been).

Reported from the NY Post This morning: http://www.nypost.com/news/worldnews/18722.htm

A bit overdone, but interesting nonetheless.

Are there other pictures and are there details of the landing? (Evac slides, etc.)

NY Post tends to sensationalize, to say the least, but I got the Post in hard copy this AM and on the front page is a passenger's pic of fuel being dumped from the wing, and inside just a couple of pictures of passengers interviewed and what I think is a stock photo of an AA 777....It's one of those headlines that's more sensational than the actual story, in fact some passenger observed when they landed and saw the emergency vehicles they were surprised such a fuss had been made...Either way, crew got 'em down safely with minimal drama, good job I say.

Yes, that's what the Post does. Not to mention the sub-title "Cripled Jet...Atlantic scare."  Insane

As an NYer, I should add for the benefit of those not from here or who haven't visited lately, since 9/11 people around here and especially the media do get a little antsy whenever there's a local story involving an airliner in trouble. Without understanding the current NYC mindset it's hard to get what the fuss is about...

Yes, that is true (I'm from NYC also  Big grin) and the NY Post does not always have "leading" stories, but rather eye-catching ones - but it was still interesting.

Even I freaked a bit last week when they said that RAM flight was going to return to JFK with the guy who claimed he'd be kidnapped by Al Qaeda onboard, but in the end they had the good sense to land it up in Bangor which is not a very densely populated area!

"I heard two big noises. We dropped all the fuel over the sea. You could see the fuel going out of the wing."

All the fuel huh? Somehow I doubt that  Big grin

The Post is the nantional Enquirer of Newspapers. If you read the www.1010wins.com article, its very blunt and to the point.

while it is nice to see the nypost with a front page that is not directly related to martha stweart, i must say it is rather a silly sensationalization of the story. but thats why many love the post!

"Passengers gasped as they watched a stream of jet fuel shooting out of a nozzle on the wing, dropping harmlessly into the Atlantic Ocean below."

does the fuel ACTUALLY vaporize as the story later claims? because of course, i seriously DOUBT that it would ever be 'safe' in an environmental sense to dump jet fuel into the ocean, or atmosphere.

It's like that all the time...MEDIA. Suprisingly enough they got the airplane type correct. The writer should be up for an academy award or something. It's like this kind of emergency never ever happened.

But I guess that's the job of a reporter. To be over dramatic.

Just compare the Post's coverage to that of the Times: a small item in the Metro section.

And the Times was probably more concerned with the environmental damage of dumping the fuel.

RiverVisual put it lightly. I'll paste in what I mentioned in another thread about this incident:

Wow, the media is making this out to be a bigger problem than it is.

If I were American Airlines, I would sue the New York Post for slander. Seriously.

An engine fails and most often they will still be able to make it to land uneventfully, just like it did.

Of course maybe, the New York Post's already existing reputation for being a gossipy piece of trash might be able to make AA look the other way.

It's not a New York 9/11 thing.....it's a nmew York Post "We have nothign better to do thean get people scared" thing.

"As the pilot radioed in word of the trouble, emergency crews scrambled to JFK to get ready in case the plane had a rough landing - or worse."

They tend to dramatize a lot
