NW Horror Stories

Mon Jan 24, 2000 7:13 pm

I'm sure many of you have flown NW. My family has had a lot of trouble with them lately. My dad flew DTW-JAX and was over an hour late and he ended up missing a meeting. So did other FAA employees on that flight. And he flew in a DC-9-10 which is comparable to the back of a truck. Our friends were recently going CLE-DTW-MCO on NW. At least they thought they were. Then the old DC-9 had an autopilot problem and NW never got another aircraft. 4 hours later everyone was looking for a new airline and our friends ended up taking COA which had a perfect flight. I'd like to hear your NW stories. I'm sure some of you have some!

First I'll start off saying I like NW, and I'm not for the bashing of them. Most of my flights with them are great, the only problem was this summer when the navigational system crashed on the DC-10 and we left like 45 min late, so by the time we got to LAX, our flight to MEM was loaded, and ready to go. Thank god they held it for everybody.

My dad was in Miami and for some reason they couldn't leave Miami for awhile so my dad waited 5hrs. until the shipped him on a bus to Tampa was very very late getting home to Charlotte.

I was in Pittsburgh and some mechanical prob with the hydruaics or something in the nosegear broke, they weren't too clear but that is to be expected. I live in MSP and fly mostly to PIT and CLT and prefer to fly USAirways but I dont want to say I wont fly on an airline.

The only good experience ive had on NWA is when i was flying to OMA and i didn't have an assigned seat and coach was full so they put me in first which was nice but we flew right into a Midwest thunderstorm so all I got was a drink before we took off.

I have only flown with NW once. It was from OKC to Memphis, then to DTW, then on to CDG. I have to say that I had a pretty good flight on all of the planes. However, their DC-9's sucked I thought. They had really thin seats, kinda like on an ATR-72. But, the DC-10 flight from DTW to CDG was fairly nice, though I have been on better, (BA 777 to DFW and AA 777 from DFW to NRT).

Having lived in MSP for past 20 years, NWA while certainly not up to top 10 world airline standards, still has top notch flight crews and particularly top notch maintenance and mechanical staff. Northwest maintenance is top notch!

As they upgrade and rejuvenate their fleet they will be a force to be reckoned with. Their Wings alliance is absolutely first class.

My parents were avid NW fliers in the 70s. I personally flew them the last time in '97. Outbound on a 727, Inbound on a 757.

No horror stories, just an hour delay with the 757 due to , um, "mechanical" problem. (as they put it).
