What Is The Difference Between Chinese Airlines?

Tue Feb 24, 2004 11:34 pm

I never understood what are the differences between the Chinese airlines that operate Int'l flights.
I know - Chinese Airlines is Taiwanese. That's fine.
But what about Air China, China Eastern, China Southern and China Southwest.
Are they all owned by the gov't?
If so, why the breakup?
are they based in different cities?
do they concentrate on different destinations?
Are they connected in anyway? Any alliances?
Does one have better service than the rest?

Chinese Airline (no such thing) is not Taiwanese, China Airlines (CAL) is. And they are based in Taipei (TPE).

Air China is the designated flag carrier of China and they are based in Beijing (BJS), the capital of China.

China Eastern is based in Shanghai Pudong (PVG).

China Southern is based in Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN).

China Southwest is based in Chengdu (not too sure abt the airport code)...

CAAC (Civil Aviation Administration of China) was the original airline of China. Their mode of operation was rather similar to Aeroflot of the USSR-era. Sometime in the mid-80s, the Chinese govt decided that CAAC should cease as an airline and funtion just as a governing body and this gave birth to the different arms of CAAC under the guise of CZ, MU, CA... etc.

CAAC still exist today to govern these airlines but only as a beauracratic government agency.

there's about 4 different air groups in China operating mix fleet of Airbus and Boeings primarily 737 and 737NG.
most of them are fairly good but beware of many of the regional airlines with wet leased Russian equipmnet. Among all the regionals, Shanghai Airlines is probably the best with B757, and B767's.

The fleet that is the best are the ones that operate both Airbus and Boeing.I love to fly the 757 and as for the 767, I rather fly 777 over the 767 anyday.
