AA MIA-PAP: Are They Canceled?

Wed Feb 25, 2004 4:24 am

With the crisis in Haiti, has American Airlines been cancelling their flights to Port-au-Price? Reminds me of what happened in Sri Lanka, and SriLankan lost what 4 planes? Hope things settle there soon.

Well- on CNN this morning they were commenting on how AA has slashed the prices from MIA to PAP to $150 or so- I missed if it was one-way or R/T though... Even then I think that price is a bit too high for me right about now- never seen a coup up close though, could be kinda interesting (or bloody).

In Apollo its $159 pre tax, and with tax its 226 rt.

It would certainly be an adventure holiday.

I might of missed it, but are there any state department warnings out there about travel to Hatiti? I would assume so.

I would imagine that flights will be cancelled if rebel forces get closer to PAP. Several government officials escaped Cap Haitien last weekend by commandeering/hijacking a domestic flight out of CAP. Without doubt, that's a risk AA will not run.

Flights operated per normal today. AA has very quick turnarounds in Port-Au-Prince for security purposes.

Though fares have hit rock bottom from Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. One week advance purchase return fares:

MIA-PAP: $289.50
FLL-PAP: $218.00

This is a market were the average advanced purchase fare is between $400 and $500 and walk-up fares are as high as $1,100 in coach for a less than two hour flight.

JFK-PAP and BOS-PAP fares are still normal, but AA limits supply a lot more from those two markets than they do from Miami and Ft. Lauderdale.

'I've never seen a coup up close' ?? I can think of many better ways to go on vacation. There is a new State Dept advisory this week.

Jfernandez --

I just checked AA.com and didn't see that MIA-PAP offer. Might they have decided to discontinue flights?

To answer your question, if they were going to cancel it they would cancel it after FFL-PAP, JFK-PAP, and BOS-PAP. They have alot of routes to PAP other than just MIA. It's probably a tough situation for AA.

I suppose they feel somewhat safer considering they're only staying on the ground for a short period of time between flights. Then again, the second air traffic control or the airport security itself run into problems, they'll pull out in a second.

Yup. And all Air France and Dutch Caribbean flights between MIA and PAP are running as normal. Though Lynx Air does not fly to PAP, they fly to CAP.

AA may feel some obligation to keep running its flights because they're probably the only reasonable way out of the country for U.S. citizens and others who want to leave. I wouldn't imagine that road travel to the Dominican border is particularly safe. Should the Air Force start running evacuation flights, AA most likely will cancel its flights.

Yep, just like '94, when Baby Doc was sent packing. I spent 4 months at PAP airport during that time, this looks much worse...

AA ought to continue service and sent in an escort.

I mean, with all those training sorties being flown, might as well put them to use.

I think if the unrest hits Port au Prince, AA will pull out temporarily. We have cancelled service for a week or so at a time in the past with unrest in Caracas. As mentioned above, the state department has issued a travel advisory for travel to Haiti, but most of the traffic on those flights are Haitian citizens, or family members of Haitians. It is not a tourist destination. I have spoken with other crew members about it, particularly those I used to fly with from JFK to PAP and we've been monitoring the schedule, waiting to see when and if AA will suspend flights. If they do, it won't be a surprise.

Since the hijacking of IslandAir in CAP, all flights have been suspended from the Bahamas & Turks and Caicos. PAP is still considered safe but there is a travel warning to haiti. Go at your own discretion.

FOR RELEASE: Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004

AMERICAN AIRLINES SUSPENDS SERVICE BETWEEN THE U.S. AND PORT-AU-PRINCE UNTIL WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3

Challenges For Employees Getting To The Airport Led To Decision

AA Working With Customers On Alternate Travel Arrangements

MIAMI -- With many of its employees finding it increasingly difficult to get to work at the Port-au-Prince airport because of disturbances in the area, American Airlines announced today that it is suspending all service to and from Haiti until Wednesday, March 3.

Despite strife in the country, American has managed to maintain its services between the United States and Haiti until now. The airline operates three nonstop flights daily between Port-au-Prince and Miami, and one nonstop a day between Port-au-Prince and both Fort Lauderdale and New York's Kennedy Airport. American also has one flight a day on Saturdays and Sundays between Port-au-Prince and Boston.

American's last flight from Port-au-Prince, a nonstop to Miami, departed at 3:30 p.m. (local time) today. The next flights will not operate until next Wednesday, March 3.

"American has a long history of commitment to its Haiti services and has done everything possible to sustain its flights into and out of Port-au-Prince under very difficult circumstances," said Peter J. Dolara, the airline's senior vice president for Miami, the Caribbean and Latin America. "However, in recent days, it has become extremely difficult for our employees to gain access to the airport, and we are now concerned that we will not have enough people at the airport to properly serve our customers and handle our aircraft at the gate. We believe the best decision for our customers and our employees is to suspend the service for a few days until the situation in Haiti improves."

American said it is initiating calls to those customers booked on the flights being cancelled to notify them of the decision and assist them with alternate arrangements. The airline said it will honor the tickets on later flights without service fees, once its Port-au-Prince service resumes, and that refunds will be granted to those who request them.

For more information, customers in the U.S. and Haiti are advised to call American Airlines at 1-800-433-7300, contact their travel agents, or visit American's Web site at www.aa.com.

We are the people of American Airlines. And we know why you fly.

I can't say that I'm surprised. I'm sure A^A is alos concerned about the airport being taken over and having a plane held 'hostage' .

In addition, Air France is suspending PAP service until at least next week. PAP is served as part of thier island hopper service between Miami and Cayenne. The island hopper service will continue to operate, though without the stop in Port Au Prince (temporary routing is MIA-PTP-FDF-CAY).
