Ever Been Surprised To See A Large Jet While......

Wed Feb 25, 2004 5:57 am

visiting a small mostly GA airport. I am especially surprised when visiting a rural airport. I once saw a 727 sitting in Beckley WV (BKW). I also saw a C-5 Galaxy at Martinsburg WV (MRB) and a 737 and DC9 in Hot Springs Va.(HSP)

I bet when a CO DC-10 landed at Ottawa-Carp (YRP) airport last summer, there must have been some people driving along the nearby road crapping their pants as YRP's runway is only 3,850 feet!  Wow!

I flew out of BDL this summer and it was much bigger than I expected it to be. There was a delta 767 (where do they fly with it) and some 747s on the Cargo ramp.

I've seen the Red Wings/Tigers DC-9 come into PNE (Northeast Philadelphia) quite a few times, as well as the Bush-Cheney 757.

When President Bush comes to Kennebunkport, Maine to the family summer home, he usually arrives at Sanford Regional Airport-KSFM in Sanford Maine, on the military equivalent of the 757 flying as Air Force 1. He has arrived in the C-9 here as well. And of course when these visits occur, the C-130s with the motorcade also arrive, and many business jets carrying the press.
Its quite a sight for a small GA airport with no tower lots of Cessnas and Pipers with the occasional biz jet.

NYCFuturePilot:

DL comes into DL / KBDL), USA - Connecticut">BDL at least three times a day with 767s to Atlanta and sometimes CVG. Also, AA flies the A300-600 on the daily run to SJU. The 747 cargo flights are common, and UPS comes in every day with a widebody. DL / KBDL), USA - Connecticut">BDL isn't really small. The airports discussed above are truly small, mostly GA airports.

While walking down the concourse in SFO as a B727-100 comes thru the wall to lodge it's nose in the passenger gate . That will get your attention AND your shorts soiled.

I have flown in and out of Kona on UA DC-10s, which always looked enormous and somewhat out of place next to the little open-air thatched roof terminal. JAL flies 747s there, which must be even more surreal.

727-100 in Bloomington, IN surprised me
Every now and agian we get some heavy metal up here in LAF, bringing spares for Subaru or sports teams to play the Boilers. I've never seen anything bigger than a 727-200, although the 6600 runay might have sometihng to do with that.

SAA will be landing their first 747-200, ZS-SAN "Lebombo" at Rand Airport south of Johannesburg (hopefully) this Saturday, to be retired there as a museum piece. I say hopefully because this was scheduled for February 14 and postponed because of bad weather, and so far this week the weather hasn't been much better.

Rand's longest runway is only 5,446 ft.....

After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I had arrived at CMF in early October 2001. It was quite a surprise when the ski season began and I saw an XL 737-800 doing circuits in late November !

Though I know there is an air force base here at BED (Hanscom Field, Bedford, Massachusetts), every f'ing time a military 707 (not sure if it's AWACS, Sentry, KC-135, or whatever else) passes overhead (which is extremely infrequently), it scares the hell out of me. Also I've seen 727s pass overhead, but I'm not sure what they were there for. And of course, around air show time every other summer, the C-5s and C-141s pretty much blow your ears out.
Now that I think about it, I think a C-130 comes in every weekend, or maybe every other weekend. Though not huge, it's still quite a change of pace.

NZ 747 at Rarotonga, Cook Islands - the runway can accomodate it (just), but the terminal can't - the boarding lounge is a nice piece of grass outside, with trees. The aircraft takes up the whole apron, with just a couple of Air Rarotonga littlies parked up one end. Great sight.
