Funnest Planes On Take Off

Wed Feb 25, 2004 7:04 am

I have not flown on all that many planes, but I have flown on some, and my favorite to take off in is the CRJ. The CRJ just seems like it has more power than the big Boeings and Airbuses even though thats not at all true. I was wondering what your favorite airplane is durring take off?

I agree with the CRJ but also like the 757 on takeoff.
The opinions I post are of mine and mine alone, not of the airline I work for.

The 757 is pretty fun on takeoff, so is the A340.

forget planes, how about helicopters.During take-off on one flight,i was sitting in the front row of seats and the heli lifted a few feet and swept over some tree tops.It was really worth the $60 ticket.

I think takeoffs in the ATR's and other regional aircraft are funner than the big jets. But that is just my own opinion.
The 757 is a great takeoff plane, especially out of TGU. TGU is a short field, so they use alot of power and they hold the brakes while the engines spool up. A whole lot of fun.

I'd say the MD-80,757/767, and the BAe 146 are my favorites.

A318/A319

They seemed to haul down the runway with no effort, and before you know it they are in the sky!

L1011-1/100 loaded, nothing beats that initial Full power throttle "moo sound" to the transition over to that Large turbofan "Buzz saw' sound. When loaded they just lumber down the runway slowly(rattling most of the time even when much newer), I love a long takeoff roll.

Funner and funnest are not words.

The 757 is always a rocket. I also like the ERJ's.

First of all FlyingBronco05 i do realize that funnest is not a word but the title of a post being "Most Fun Planes On Take Off" just doesnt sound as good. I also see that many said the 757 and I was wondering if a plane that big really has a lot of accel?

Count me down for the B757, as well! Going down OGG's runway on TZ's 757 was an experience. It was also fun going down GUM's runway on CO's 757, too!

As for me, I have ridden on a lot of different airplanes, and DC-9 comes to mind on one take off that was a real steep angle, and a 747 once, but the airplane that I have had the most impression of power has to be the Beech 1900, the ones that Ihave been on, when they applied full power, you felt yourself get pushed back in the seat, and when they roatate it seems to climb almost straight up, I know the one time the pilot of our company said he pegged the verticle speed indicator on one climb out as it was winter time.

The most powerful/fun takeoffs I have were on an AA 757 from ORD-YYZ, practically empty plane on a very short flight. Another powerful one was AC A320 from YYZ-MIA. That was probably the best powered take-off I've ever felt. Also on a WestJet 737-700 from YUL-YHM just a few weeks back, only about 60 people on board, and again a short flight. WICKED performance. I love high powered, light take-offs.

MD80/90/717...the entire flight is so incredibly quiet no matter where you sit on the plane.

Any four engine piston...DC6, Connie..The noise and vibration. You youngsters
just haven't lived until you have been in one of these grand dads of flight and experienced take-off.
Now, the jets push you right back in your seat with noise..I like the 757 or 767.
But for sheer excitement with the noise, its the connie or DC 6(6B also).
There was nothing like it.

I sat right next to the engine on an AirTran 717 on a flight from ATL to HOU. It was a night flight, and I was tired, but the little "buzz saw" noise made me go to sleep rather than stay up. I enjoy that "buzz saw" noise. That was the best flight for me.

757 here also - is there mechanical/performance charateristics of this model/engine combo which makes us passengers rate this as most powerful?

MD-80/90 are awesome and the 777 is not that bad. When you feel yourself being pushed back into that seat on a 727 is a great feeling as well.

Not just the 757! It's gotta be the 757 taking off from SNA/John Wayne Airport sitting at the aft facing jumpseat at door 2 Left on UA's 752's. It's like a rocket!

Because of the noise ordinance the FO's hold the brakes, rev the engines and you're off with a bang! Then to get out fast and to get above Newport Beach in a hurry, the deck angle is a bit more extreme then normal... soooo fun!

Sitting at the aft facing jumpseat is great because it really feels like you're looking out of a rocket as the earth appears to fall away! (Kinda like riding a ride backwards at Six Flags) So fun! Not to mention all the noise and shaking as the FO's hold the brakes and rev the engines!

Wow! I'm gettin' all emotional about this!  Smokin cool

The most fun I ever had on a takeoff was during the time Delta was converting the DC-8s from 61s to 71s with the engine conversion. This took place in the mid 1980s. On this particular trip, we went from a dead stop to hurling down the runway to a full bore full throttle take off in only a few seconds. I don't know what was going on in the cockpit, but I could tell even my father (he worked for Delta and specialized on the JT8's) was shocked at the way we rocketed down the runway. The engine conversion created some serious overpowered aircraft. I think that one flight was the closest I have ever come to riding in a jet fighter. I think it was on that flight that my father informed me that the engine modifications resulted in brake modifications as well.

I do miss the stretched 8s and the 1011s.

The Canada 3000 B757 hops from CZM to CUN where quite the ride back in the late 80's early 90's.

And the Trislander flights from Playa del Carmen to CZM were a treat as well.

From personal rejected photo collection. My flight is helped to the gate (well I guess you could call it a gate) in Playa del Carmen circa 1989, yes that is my leg as I was hopping out to help lighten the ground crew's load.

I'm more in the favor of a ERJ 145 with 10 or so people on it....tremendous power on T/O feels like your going straight up, also the 757 has a rather high climb rate and lots of power, to bad they are not going to make them anymore. I'd take either one.

Very very definitely the MD-90. It just thunders down the runway, seemingly faster than other aircraft, then because it is so long, rotates further than most. It is great. Long live the MD-90

I think the 757 is as close to a military jet take-off as you can get on a big commercial plane. Brakes held, spool up, planes shaking, release........heaven!!! This of course was on a flight test when we were trying to shake something loose. But I had the same feeling leaving ATL on a 757 once.

There is nothing like a lightly loaded Lear 25D on takeoff from the old Denver Stapleton on a cold day! Especially if the guys in the tower were gracious enough to give unrestricted climb to 35,000'!! The Lear 25D was (and still is) a rocket!! OF course, those old GE CJ-610-8's were great at converting kerosene in to noise and smoke too.............

My favorite take off planes are the A319-111 or 100 series, the 737-300/800 and the 747-400 (expecially on Lufthansa). I love take off on all planes. A319's are really quick on take off, i think that they are very quiet and powerful.

I would say the A320 or the 757. The 757 has a great noise on takeoff, but the A320 just seems to go so fast and you're up in the air in no time.

On the other hand, I was recently on a well-loaded QF 743. We used almost all of runway 16R (the longest runway at SYD) to take off. It was great, we just kept rolling and rolling for over a minute, and then slowly rotated near the end of the runway. I could barely feel when we became airborne!
