Philippine Airlines A340-200

Wed Feb 25, 2004 2:21 pm

At one point, Philippine Airlines operated a fleet of four Airbus A340-200s to complement four of the -300 series. I believe they were operated on nonstop flights out of Manila to London and Frankfurt and one-stop to Paris via Bangkok. Then I recall the airline being temporarily shutdown and coming back with a drastically reduced fleet that did not include the A340-200s.

Questions:

1) Were the -200s owned by PAL or were they being leased from Airbus or a leasing company? I seem to recall the planes being subleased to Cathay Pacific before PAL took delivery of them.

2) If they owned them then, do they own them now but leasing them to other airline companies? Aerolineas Argentinas?

3) Anybody know where the four wound up (is Aerolineas still leasing them?).

4) Any chance they'll get the planes back? Would like to see them resurrect the Manila-London/Manila-Frankfurt (nonstop or via Bangkok)

Inquiring minds want to know.

Greetings, Iflypal! Smile

1) I'm not sure but I have a feeling that they were leased.

2 and 3 I really don't know but yes I've heard that PR's A342s went up with AR.

4) I wouldn't really count on the return of the A342 to PR's fleet.

It would be good to see PAL back in Europe though........... Big thumbs up

One thing I strongly recommend is to inquire at the Philippine Flight Simmers Group Forum (http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/1422564/) and ask there, since there are members there that know more than me. A really friendly bunch too. Big grin

BTW welcome to A.net! Smile

Ya the A342 where leased aircraft, was returned after the shutdown.

Decision is currently being made with regards to returning back to europe. Decision will be made by April. Its either or situation right now. Its basically China or Europe. Currently I only see them opening more routes to china. Europe can probably wait. Also more routes to the middle east will be needed.

The A340-200's did not get returned when PR shutdown, it was the A343's and some A333's. All four A340-200's had already gone from PR shutdown, and yes they are still with Aerolineas.

Bush, your a sad, sad man.

PR also used the A340-200 on services to Australia.

I have a photo of one taken at Brisbane in the mid 1990s.

PR used to fly DC-10s, then 747s before using the A340 to Brisbane. They no longer fly there.
