The Macedonian authorities have now confirmed the news. The conference about investment into Bosnia and Hercegovina, to which Mr. Trajkovski was on his way to, has now been cancelled.

The airplane reportedly crashed into or close to the Hrgud hill near Stolac, BiH. Rescue teams have been deployed and are on the way to the site. There is no information yet about the condition of the passengers.

Having personally flown over those mountains two weeks before, I really hope there is a chance to reach them.. those places are like the end of the world, especially in winter conditions.
I seriously think I just creamed my pants without any influence from any outside variables.

Regarding if this is the first accident involving a head of state:
In 94 the presidents of Uganda and Rwanda traveled in one airplane, which was downed by a missile, killing both and being the ignition for the biggest genocide in the recent history of mankind. Let us hope the effects of this crash will not be as dramatic.

Thanks Clipperno.

You are right, I forgot this story. It reminds me of the plane of U Thant but he was the head of the UN.

Myk, it was actually U Thant's predecessor Dag Hammarskjold who was killed in a DC-6 crash in Congo in 1961. He was travelling in the region to broker a ceasefire when the crash happened. There were still speculations to this day as to the actual cause of the crash.

Aircraft involved was a Super KingAir B200. The captain of the flight was Mirko Markovski, the copilot was Branko Ivanovski, who were longtime pilots for the Macedonian government. The flight took off from Skopje at 6.48 and there were 7 passengers on board. Radar contact was lost at 8.01 (all times local), 15 minutes before ETA.

I have met Trajkovski personally. He was a great guy and was doing a great job trying to keep all Macedonians together.
I'm deeply sad about this.

Sad news. Here in the US just less than 2 years ago, Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota was also killed in the crash of a King Air.

As you can see below, the dry, rocky terrain in Bosnia is fairly similar to the area when Secretary Ron Brown's plane crashed in 1996. That accident happened near Dubrovnik, Croatia, which actually isn't that far from Mostar.

This is really sad news for the state of Macedonia. President Trajkovski was a well respected leader in the region, and was on his way to attend a conference in Mostar. Delegations from Ljubljana, Zagreb, and Belgrade were unable to land at Mostar, because of the severe weather conditions.

The plane crashed in the Stolac municipality, a mountainous region of Hercegovina. It is said that the plane lost contact with air traffic controllers shortly after it exited Serbia & Montenegro airspace.

My condolences to the Macedonian people.

Again, regarding if this is the first accident involving a head of state.
Back in the mid 80's the president of Mozambique was also killed when the plane he was travelling in, crashed.
