AC//AC & JM Join Forces!

On April 5, 2004, concurrent with Air Jamaica's planned return to Toronto, JM & AC have entered into an expanded codesharing agreement between Canada and Jamaica.

JM will commence daily non-stop A321 service between YYZ & KIN. In addition, AC will offer twice-weekly A319 service (TU & FR), for a total of 9 weekly flights. A substantial increase over the previous 5 weekly flights operated solely by AC.

AC will offer daily non-stop A320 service between YYZ & MBJ.

Both carriers will codeshare on each others services, and to the respective destinations, and effective April 6th will welcome customers at Toronto T1New.

P.S. In essence AC is "freeing up" A 762/763 on the KIN route. Wonder where it will be reallocated to??

This is not what I was hoping for. That means that fares will continue to be high given that the airlines are still in bed with each other. I expected true competition on the route.

Didn't this occur a ways back, (1996, 1997ish?) when the two used to codeshare? (Mind you, it could of been even earlier)

It fell through then, (Perhaps cause of the advent of Star etc.) yet they have decided to recommence codesharing, must of been some mighty good incentive concerning both parties.

Unless, of course, I'm mistaken.

Maybe this means that JM will be a future "Star" carrier??

When JM pulled out of YYZ in 1991, they negotiated a close-ended codeshare with AC, meaning they purchased approximately 20-25 Y/C seats per flight to KIN and MBJ respectively.

JM's mandate is to serve cities with high Jamaican populations, which makes you wonder why/how they would have pulled the plug in the first place. I know that Canadians of Jamaican descent have been screaming for repatriated JM service for a decade.

I know from the AC end, they will be purchasing 30 Y/C seats on JM078/JM079(AC9830/AC9831), which will be operating an A321 with 12 Top Class and 176 economy seats. Must be a tight pitch as AC's 321's hold 166 total (24J/142Y).

Ironically, JM's inaguration will be on the last day of OldT1, April 5/2004.

A330JAMAICA - Still plenty of competition with the charters such as TS and SSV. Introductory fare I believe through the summer of $499.00 CAD, which is pretty decent.

It's good to know that JM is returning to YYZ. Given that Toronto has the largest Jamaican population outside the Caribbean island, I guess it makes sense. I know that AC used to own a good portion of Air Jamaica; does anyone know when they sold their shares?

Air Canada had a minority interest in Air Jamaica until the late 70's, at which time through the governement, JM acquired back the outstanding shares.

So AC will serve YYZ-MBJ primarily and JM will serve YYZ-KIN exclusively? I hope i am wrong, but it seems that, as A330Jamaica said, there isnt true competition. For me personally, I have never considered taking chartered aircraft when i travel anywhere.

True. AC had a 40% share of JM when JM was set up in the early 70's. The early JM fleet was a DC-8-61 and 3 DC-9-30's which were common to the AC fleet. A DC-8-62 (which AC did not operate) was also added. All these aircraft were used on the YYZ service (yup, even the DC-9's). JM also ordered 1 L-1011 in 1972 which was cancelled before delivery. When AC ordered its first 722's in 1973, JM also ordered 4 722's. From about 1975 to 1980, the JM 722's operated into YYZ some via PHL with fifth freedoms. From 1980, the A300 was used on YYZ services until JM pulled out of YYZ.

In summer 88, JM contracted with Worldways to operate a daily DC-8 YYZ-MBJ-KIN-YYZ. One WG DC-8 had joint Worldways/Air Jamaica titles for a while.

Lkg fwd to seeing JM return to YYZ! Glad to see it's the 321 also!





I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

You'll get some more competition to Jamaica once WJ picks up some more planes provided that AC doesn't cry to the government every time WJ gets another gate.

No, not at all.

airJamaica also has a codesharing deal with Delta that is extremely extensive.

With all due respect, WJ hasn't even started their YYZ expansion, nor any US sked, let alone international flying beyond the odd charter. Cockiness in the context of this topic & situation is simply bewildering.
