Do Any Airlines Still Have Menus In Coach?

Fri Feb 27, 2004 12:31 pm

I was browsing through airlinemeals.net (on the CO section - what else?), and I noticed that on a person's flights from EWR-HKG and NRT-EWR in coach, CO provided menus for the multiple meals that were served onboard. I had never realized that CO did this on international flights in Y, as my flights to the Caribbean have not had them.

Do many airlines do this, or is this something unique to CO?

All USA-based airlines have menus in Y to Asia, probably because of language issues...

That would make sense - I didn't think of that. If it's strictly for language reasons, do they do it to countries such as Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Norway (thanks to CO), etc. where English isn't the official language?

I would assume they would do it on most international markets, the Caribbean probably not, I'm pretty sure that's not a high-yield market, especially compared to Eupore and Asia from the US.

South African Airways (SAA) provides menues in economy class (along with other cool anemities) - and I must say they are wonderfully printed! (I love the hummingbird)

Theres a website for pics of those menues
http://www.airlinemeals.net/menus/SouthAfrican.html

I love airlines who still keep the art of flying in place.

The Caribbean is actually a super high yield market. CO and AA charge upwards of $700 for flights from EWR to STT, SXM, AUA, BGI, etc. that are only ~4 hours long with no special needs (i.e. EWR-HKG needs multiple meals, etc.).

Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Singapore Airlines has menus in coach, though there's no surprise there. I'm kicking myself for not taking at least one of them when I flew with them in Jan.  Angry

QF do on all International Flights for all classes, Even for the following domestic services as follows.

PER-BNE/SYD/CBR/MEL.

These QF domestic flights follow the same level of service for international flights of such length.

It is for these reason(s) QF has a big strangehold on PER services, also given DJ's recent ETOPS problems on domestic flights - among them PER-BNE

DL has menus in Y on their trans-Atlantic flghts, even to/from the UK and Ireland where the language barrier (presumably) isn't an issue. On flights between the US and a non-English speaking country, the menu will be printed in English on one side and the other language on the reverse.

Air France does provide a menu in coach on all long-haul flights (a choice of 2 hot main courses ). All drinks, including alcohol and French Champagne, are free of charge.

Exception : Long-haul flights to/from PARIS to/from French Overseas Department and "sun" destinations : PTP, FDF, SXM, CAY, RUN, PUJ, SDQ, HAV, MRU : No menu in "M" class (1 hot main course, no choice ). No Champagne.("M" class" = Discount Economy)
A menu (2 hot main courses choice ) and Champagne in the "Alizée" class on these destinations. Alizée Class is more or less equivalent the the "Standard" coach class on the classic long-haul flights.

SAA unfortunately does not have any menus in Economy Class on longhaul flights anymore. They disappeared about a half year ago or so.

For the time being, Song still offers menus. I heard they will do away with them once they get the online ordering system perfected as well as the PTVs which will feature the menu on the TV. Till then, they will still carry the paper menus.

I am not sure why we bother to pass out menu's. On every single flight in Business Class and Main Cabin when you ask "would you care for dinner?" they respond "well what do you have?" This happens at least 3-4 times in my section alone

Ryanair have menus on some flights. They even have them stuck on the back of the middle seat in each row on some aircraft. Naturally everything on the menu has to be paid for.

I must add that on the SONG menu dated 2004 February 15, There is some competitive Innuendo in there.

The Fruit Yogurt Cup says at the bottom
You can't do yoga on a plane, this is the next best thing.

Also, Under the Alcoholic Beverages menu, it says
Must be at least 21, chronologically, not mentally  Smile

Funny you can't do yoga on a plane, when I am sitting here looking at B6s Yoga Card.

Just flew Air France EWR-CDG-BOM and back last week, and there were menus in Economy (tempo) on all flights. Good choice of menu too, on the flights to/from India, there was a choice of one Indian main course and one French. I tried one each on each flight and I must say they have nailed the regional menus pretty good.

cheers

p.s. I remember asking an FA on a Delta flight ATL-SJC what my choices are for dinner and his response was, "Either you eat it or you don't".

Virgin hasnt had menus in coach for at least a year or two now- I think they pulled them after 9/11, but cant really remember. I do know that they didnt have them in December 03, February 03 or June 02- this was on the LAX-LHR route. I miss having them because you never quite know what is going to be served, but always thought they were a nice touch. I can understand the waste issue though.

Be nice if they brought them back, well see in June again this year  Smile

Never in my life have I been offered a printed menu in coach, on any flight, on any airline. And that includes transatlantic CO, IB, KL, TW and British Caledonian.

>I was browsing through airlinemeals.net (on the CO section - what else?), and I noticed that on a person's flights from EWR-HKG and NRT-EWR in coach, CO provided menus for the multiple meals that were served onboard<

I've only flown CO transpacific on BF, so I don't know about coach, but I've flown CO transatlantic coach quite a lot (EWR-CO / LIRF), Italy">FCO, IAH-LGW, EWR-MAD many, many times) and have never seen a printed menu there.

Even on CO's EWR-MEX C class, sometimes I've seen them and sometimes not, although I think this has been mostly due to lazy flight attendants (who, somehow, seem to prefer the evening EWR-MEX flight).

Functions Of Menus

Mon Mar 01, 2004 2:05 pm

I guess printed menus have practical usage... especially on flights to foreign countries. Most airlines flying into Japan have printed menus, just because many people don't speak fluent English, and it really gives the F/As much needed help.

For first and business class, meals are usually more extravagant and it is easier for the passengers to pick their choice of appetizers (many airlines have choices for appetizers now), and entrees, and desserts... It makes you feel like you are dining in a restaurant.

For economy class, they usually only have them on international flights for practical reasons. They also make the cabin class a bit fancier... Sometimes they are for advertising reasons... promoting certain countries... I recalled seeing an Asiana Y menus for ICN-HKG on a special HKG booklet for October last year... I recalled when BA last had menus in Y, they double served as a destination guide with a city map... also postcard style to promote the airlines, like Thai Airways... of course advertising as featured in JAL and ANA menus for various companies, such as coffee, iced drinks, and Evian water lately... (Of course, their F/As sometime have troubles speaking English... so the printed menus are for practical reasons as well). NW menus are designed specfically that if you point to the entree choice you want in Japanese... there is an English translation right above it... so the F/A knows what you want... also double served as duty free order forms in the back of the menus... Dragonair has menus even for the two hours PVG to HKG flight... a small one... I guess for Mainlaind passengers who can't speak Mandarin, they can point the entree they want to the F/As who may or may not speak their dialects... also KA does promotions with certain restaurants, so they have to do that for promotions...

China Airlines have recently used PTVs to show entree choices as well... to replace the printed menus... which is not a bad idea... during meal times, they simply display the menu on one of the channels...

As a menu collector, it is sad to see printed menus disappearing and getting smaller... but I guess it is the cost-cutting age and if printed menus' eliminations can lead to better food quality, that is better... but I guess for some international flights, they will be there for a while...
