Nordam lands big Airbus contract
Tulsa aerospace giant Nordam just won a big contract; one could even call it a "super-jumbo" contract.
News on 6 business reporter Steve Berg says the contract is for the new Airbus A-380, which is sometimes called a "super-jumbo" jet. Nordam will be the exclusive supplier for all the cabin and door windows in the A-380. Those windows are manufactured right here in Tulsa.
The A-380 is the largest commercial aircraft ever built. It has about 250 windows or more, "per" plane. That's twice as many as the average-sized aircraft. So it's the sheer number of windows per plane that makes it such a lucrative contract for Nordam.
Airbus has just started production on the aircraft, and Nordam officials say it already looks like it will be a big seller. Bob Brooks with Nordam’s Transparency Division: "they've got 130 airplanes sold, so it's a major contract. They're working on airplane number one and number two right now, so it's got a lot of years to go."
Nordam does not expect to increase jobs in the short term. The big planes take a "long" time for Airbus to build, so Nordam officials say they can maintain the window supply with their current workforce. But it's a contract that has huge benefits for the health of this Tulsa-based company.
