Spotting At MSP

Sun Feb 29, 2004 6:46 am

Where are the good spots to catch the action at MSP? Is it alright to watch from the parking garage? I enjoy watching the landings of aircraft coming in from the north west by standing in the elevator area at the front of the parking garages next to the terminal.

Drive your car up to the top floor of the long term parking garages. You can drive (or walk) from side to side in the parking garage, covering both main runways, with awesome views of taxi, takeoff and landings. It costs like 3 bucks for the first hour and 2 per hour after that I believe. But for the unbeatable view, it is worth it.

Many park at the lot on Post Road that gives you an almost unadulterated view (except for the fence line) of aircraft on 30L/12R. Many photos on this site have been captured from this location!

If they landing over the Minnesota river (30L) you can catch great action/approach shots from the parking lot at the SA Gas station on Postroad. (My favorite spot for approach shots). If they landing from the other side (12L/R) you find a very good approach spot by a little pond which is of Cedar Avenue.
Another great spot is the Cementry just behind Post road. You stand on a Hill and Runway 30L/12R runs right parallel in front of you. The sun is perfect from noon until sunset here.

Good luck, but be careful you will get tired of "red ass planes" very soon.....

I spot a ton at MSP! There are many spotting places that I enjoy. I even spot from my bedroom, I'm that close to MSP!

At the airport, I go to Post Road sometimes, it's free, and you can meet a lot of other spotters there. Not too good for photography, due to fence in the way! Another is the parking garage, top level, level 9! You have unbeatable views of 12L/30R, and 30L/12R. Another great spot is when the aircraft arrive 30L/R, go over to the 30L approach lights, and sit around there and they come in super low! I don't think the people at Fort Snelling or the Air Force organization by the place care if you stay there for a while. During the summer, you frequently see the entire grassy field loaded with people viewing the aircraft come in!

There used to be a spot over by Fort Snelling golf course with a little parking lot? Not sure it it's still there or if it's even accessible anymore. If it is that was a good spot. Real close to the runway if they were landing 30L.

The best place to spot planes is at Taft Park in Richfield. My father's former home is right on the glidepath of 12R/30L. From his backyard, I watched several NW planes, along with AA, DL, and TZ.

We all have our secrets, don't we.  Big grin

Almost all the good spots are on MSP Update, however.
