Some Boac And BA VC-10 Brochures

Mon Mar 01, 2004 1:56 am

Fancy a nostalgia trip? From the golden age of jetliners?
When flying was an still a bit of an adventure, when jets were the new big thing.
What could better epitomize this than some BOAC and BA brochures extolling the virtues of the VC-10, the second most beautiful airliner ever built and the most beautiful subsonic one.

Brilliant! I'd love to have flown on a VC-10 back in those days.

Hearing 4 RR Conways at full thrust is nearly as good as Olympus 593s.  Smile

BTW, has anyone seen the VC-10 DVD from Avion Video and can recommend it?

@GDB :
Ahh, these brochures are nice  Smile Unfortunately I never flew on the VC-10, but have visited some of them in Germany and the UK.

4 years ago I had a stopover in AMS and went from Schiphol airport to the city centre. By coincidence I found a used book flea market there, and - like with eagle eyes - I spotted a little 48 page brochure "Flying the VC-10", by Flying magazine. The surprise was even nicer when I heard that the chap selling it only wanted 4 Euros for it.... well, guess if I bought it or not  Big grin

@ Fly-K :
I have the DVD and love it. Very nicely done. I was not too impressed with their "London Airport in the 1960s" DVD, but the VC-10 is nice!

Cheers,
Tom

I've always been a VC-10 fan! Here is YYZ we used to get charter BUA VC-10's in the late 60's and the occasional BOAC VC-10 sub for a 707! It was always a treat to see them!

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Patroni, I only have the Heathrow DVD and thought it was OK, even though the quality wasn't the best. So I suppose I'll like the VC-10 DVD even more!

Too young to have ever flown a VC10 and remembered it - but that's my loss. Certainly a beautiful aircraft. Can't be said that advertising the romance of flying was dead by the 1970s either looking at that BOAC/BA stuff. My favourite has to be the one below - maybe if only because you'd never get away with it these days.

I was fortunate to have some memorable VC10 flights in the late 60's and the 70's. I especially remember taking the 'Scottish Monarch' from Prestwick to JFK and walking out across the tarmac to the beautiful, high-tailed BOAC 'Standard' parked on the ramp. At the foot of the boarding stairs a tartan-kilted highlander was playing his bagpipes. A very stylish send-off.

East African Airways operated a fleet of beautiful 'Supers'. I recall boarding one at Heathrow in 1969. The beautiful and very chic stewardesses wore uniforms trimmed with (faux) leopard skin...the interior sidewall panels depicted animal scenes on the African savannah. And how's this for creating atmosphere: the boarding "music" was the softly hypnotic beating of distant tribal drums. Talk about feeling as though you were suddenly in Africa!

These aircraft were even more impressive in person. That dark blue with the gold accents was really classy. I remember seeing them on at ORD in the late 60's. They operated them ORD-Montreal-LHR. Eventually BOAC switched the route over to Rolls Royce 707's. Those even looked great in this livery.

Absolutely the most beautiful aircraft I have ever seen!

Thanks, GDB, for the memories! Slightly before VC10, but have a look at the following from 59, 60, 61!
