WN Not As Bad As Many Make It Out To Be

Tue Mar 02, 2004 7:27 am

I just flew WN over the weekend and have to say it is a nice airline to fly.

WN is like any other airline. Nice clean planes and a great/funny flight crew. From the pilots right to the gate agents, there is tons of humor while in the meantime, they get the job done and all with a smile and of utmost safety. The only difference is WN targets younger flyers, college students, and the non experienced/ budgeted traveler.

I don't see who can argue anything negative about Southwest-they are undisbutably the greatest success story of airlines in the jet age. I think the A&E show, (which is very good), does not do them justice. I think what is not shown on the show that is of major significance is their financial sheets and safety record.

FWIW, I flew this past weekend and stayed overnight in a city where another airline also has a large presence in addition to SWA. On the hotel shuttle bus both ways, everyone else was yaking about how bad local Airline-X was. All totalled, 5 different folks chimed in. (I had my ID put away, and took no part in the discussion, nor will I identify Airline-X to hopefully prevent this thread from creeping into a SWA vs. Airline-X thread).

Now, SWA certainly isn't perfect (nobody is), but given the quantity of folks I ran into that hated Airline-X, I'm left with the feeling that even on our "bad" days we're still not all that bad, comparatively speaking. (This wasn't the first time that I'd heard Airline-X maligned, either..)

Re: the A&E show, many have stated (erroneously, I believe) that "all we fly around are drunks and irates" etc. etc. buy they fail to appreciate the -real- ratio of 2 or 3 actual A&E goofballs on a show to the tens of thousands of non-goofball pax that fly every day. It'd be a pretty damn boring show if all they showed was the 99.9999952% "normal" folks that flew SWA every day....

Most airlines aren't as bad as they are out to be on a.net. The fact that WN is offering DTW-TUL for $49 isn't good enough unless it comes with PTV, hot meals & Hooters Air Girls. And oh yeah, $49 is too much because NW is offering the route for the same price and WN is a LCC...

And from my experiences, even if one bitches 'I'll next fly XX again,' he/she will....

I have never flown WN (thanks to the Wright Amendment), but I do agree that while Airline is funny, it really makes WN look like an airline full of drunks and idiots. I know it's not true, but it would be nice to focus on other things for one whole episode!

In what universe?

Southwest's "bread and butter" are the multitudes of business travelers (like me), who value rational last-minute fares, good quality and plenty of frequency, to accommodate ever-changing plans.

The leisure travelers benefit from WN's always-reasonale fare structure, as do all travelers in every market WN enters. But Southwest's core passengers are, and always have been, dedicated business travelers.

I have to add to scuttlers comment. The only airline that fits that description is JetBlue. NYC-FLA is their "bread and butter" route....and I'd venture to guess that the ratio of leisure to business passengers is considerably higher on JetBlue. Not putting down JetBlue - but those folks listed above were the target market at JetBlue's inception.
