Varig To Resume MIA-GIG

Varig is resuming non-stop service between Miami and Rio de Janeiro on 18 June 2004:

RG 8814 GIG 1115-1850 MIA
RG 8815 MIA 1000-1920 GIG

Service will operate Thursday through Sunday in both directions. They will increase aircraft utlization because the MD11 arriving from GRU in the morning will turn around to GIG quickly.

A busy summer for Miami-Brazil. Despite the loss of United on MIA-GRU, there is a lot of additional service with twelve new weekly round trips.

Summer 2003:
MIA-GRU: AA 14x, UA 7x, RG 7x, JJ 7x
MIA-GIG: AA 11x
MIA-MAO: LB 2x
TOTAL: 48x

Summer 2004:
MIA-GRU: AA 21x, RG 7x, JJ 13x
MIA-GIG: AA 12x, RG 4x
MIA-MAO: LB 2x
MIA-SSA: JJ 1x
TOTAL: 60x

Really cool news. I hope this will be profitable for RG; now that the economic situation in Latin America is improving, I believe the MIA-South America market will expand.

Finally! Finally somebody else has realized there is a market in the GIG-MIA route. American is flying jam packed on that route, since it was the only one flying non-stop.

Not only was AA the only airline flying MIA-GIG non-stop, they were the only airline flying non-stop between North America and Rio de Janeiro. Hopefully, the resumption of MIA-GIG is just the beginning. I'm really crossing my fingers to see the resumptions of MAO, REC, FOR, and/or BEL.

Thanks for quick response to me about with their news and what is else was going on with those airlines? It would beefing up more flight on AA to GRU or GIG?

A resumption of nonstop NYC-GIG service would be nice, too.

Unfortunately, when I flew EWR-GRU-GIG on CO last summer, the flight to GRU wasn't too full and the GIG flight--which carries passengers from both IAH and EWR--was even less full. So I'm not holding my breath for a return of CO's EWR-GIG nonstop.

I dont get it, I mean, RG is using JJ's Aircraft for like 5 days now, since they dont have any aircraft for MIA-GRU.

How could they be planning on MIA-GIG direct also, if someone from RG here in MIA told me that they have a big debt that doesnt permit them to have sufficcient aircraft.

They told me that RG's debt is more or less 1 billion dollar, could someone confirm this?

They will not need any extra aircraft to fly this route.

Flying between Miami and Brazil with the current redeye schedule required two aircraft.

Plane 1: Dep. GRU Monday; arr. MIA Tuesday, dep. MIA Tues.; Arr. GRU Wed.
Plane 2: Dep. MIA Monday; arr. GRU Tuesday, dep. GRU Tues.; Arr. MIA Wed.

New sched also requieres the same two aircraft:
Plane 1: Will be routed GIG-GRU-MIA, land at MIA in the morning, and turn right around to do MIA-GIG-GRU. In Sao Paulo, the plane will once again turn right around and do the redeye GIG-GRU-MIA, be back in Miami the next morning.
Plane 2: Will be routed MIA-GRU-GIG redeye. In GIG, will turn around and do GIG-MIA. Will then do the MIA-GRU-GIG redeye, and be ready for the daylight out of GIG the next day.

It is increased aircraft utlization in an very undeserved market.

Now I get it,

Alright, they will use 2, like they were doing the other day over here in MIA when the A/C stayed from 5 AM to 6 PM standing in parking.

I remember once they were only using one aircraft for MIA-GRU, the plane always came late because departed late from GRU, and that was like a domino effect and always continued.

Hopefully they wont have that same type of delays by then.

But the question is, Does RG have the aircraft to do the route?

It seems like RG is not in a good economic situation these days.
