Airports Closed

Wed Jan 26, 2000 12:27 am

I have just found that Philadelphia International Airport is closed until futher notice. US Airways, which accounts for 60% of flights in and out of PHL, have cancelled all flight untill 3 P.M. EST. I have heard that all New Jersey airports are open and experiencing heavy delays. I have also heard that La Guardia is closed and JFK is experiencing up to 90 min. delays. Does anyone have any information about Dulles or anything down south? I have some friends travelling today, and I don't think they really have a chance.

BWI is closed u ntil 1pm, due to cleaning of the runway. Of course, all flights are VERY late. LGA is closed. The storm should clear over MD/DC by 5pm tonight, but due to high winds, delas will still be in effect. Good luck!

3:00pm Update!

Wed Jan 26, 2000 5:21 am

Ok. Here is that latest airport news...

IAD- All 3 runways open, delayed flights departing, no landingds

DCA- No flights our or in

BWI- 1 runway cleared, VERY late departures, cancelations, no incomming flights, likly to close again at 6 for plowing

LGA- Closed

BOS- Closed

JFK- Most flights canceled, yet SOME delayed but leaving

EWR- Same as JFK

US- Canceled ALL East Coast flights from Raeigh-BOS until ATLEAST 6pm

UAL- Call 800-241-6522, very little flights leaving the east, if they are, of course, they will be VERY late!

The storm is moving up the coast, and will leave the DC/MD area by 5:30pm (pushed back from the last post). Although the storm will be gone by tomorrow, flurries are again in the forecast tomorrow for DC (flurries were predicted for today, and we got 1 foot!). Also, high winds on the East coast will push the snow back onto the runway(s) overnight, causing delays and cancelations tomorrow. Good luck!

I'm listening to JFK Tower right now and currently their reporting light turbulance and moderate/mixed icing.

Earlier a B1900 had issued an urgent pilot report saying that he encountered severe clear icing.

A few others reported strong turbulance and wind shear of +/- 15-20kts.

Right now their landing one runway (4L) because the breaking action on (4R) was reported as poor.

My grandparents are leaving on an Iberian 747 at 6:20pm EST (2320Z). The flight number is 6250.

DCA/BWI Has Just Been Closed!

Wed Jan 26, 2000 7:27 am

Washington's Ronald Regan National Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Airport has JUST been closed as Maryland is put under a state of emergancy along with most of North Carolina, who hasen't ever seen this much snow. Southwest is continuing to try and get planes out. IAD's 3 runways are still open, but airlines (most of them) have cancelled flights. DCA is planning to open tomorrow at 6am. Once again, the storms ending point in DC/MD has been pushed back to 9pm this evening, with another 4-6 inches (plus the foot we already had!) expected. High gusts will push snow back onto the runways. Here are the number of lfights airlines GUESTAMATE have been cancelled...

UAL- 400+ flights cancelled
AA- 400+ flights cancelled
US- 600+ flights cancelled

Once again, good luck!

RIC, Richmond International Airport, is closed and all flights are canceled until further notice. We have over a foot of snow, and at 5:40 PM it is still coming down. We have blizzard conditions with very high winds.

I work at BWI and this Sucks! Total so far today I've counted 26 flights departing and 2 incoming. Southwest seems to be the only airline considering operations and everything is at pilots discretion. The only Runway going is 33Left. ILS is out on 28 and winds are from the N-NW 15-20 and gusting. Happy Flying!!

I know that 2 days ago PIT had some delays on the Arrival from Dulles and National along with Hagerstown and Richmond. They may be snow but just they could be late?

I heard last night that Richmond was closed "indefintely", whatever that means!
I know they got a great amount of snow there.

My brother is actually sown there visiting a college friend and he was supposed to return to Boston today, I guess it is safe to say he won't be!

Flights Coming From Europe

Wed Jan 26, 2000 10:35 pm

Hello all,
I just wonder what is happening to all these flights coming in from Europe. I know some of them (don't have the exact number) went to YMX (opened 24/24) yesterday, but is there any other places where flights from Europe can go in these conditions ? And what happen to the passengers if they have to stop in such airports ?

Most/many flights from Europe were diverted to Montreal, Toronto or Chicago. Seems like the Canadians and Chicagoans are more experienced dealing with snow. People panic on the east coast with simple snow flurries. Yesterday, it was more than they could handle.

Check my topic, Weather Headache. I'm curious how airlines handle getting things back to normal. has many forums. It has spell check and search functions. Use them before posting!

Yeah, I don't know why Logan closed at all yesterday. We didn't get as much snow as DC or Philly and yet they closed for several hours yesterday. I realize it is important to make certain the runways are clear and there is no ice but I can't see why Logan had to close for so long. We did have ice this morning but Logan was open!

I think total snowfall for Boston was 3 1/2 to 5 inches at the most.

RE: Logan

Thu Jan 27, 2000 3:55 am

The problem with Logan is that its out on the bay, and gets whipped to death by winds. There doesn't have to be that much snow on the ground to wreck havoc with Logan. When there is 5" on the ground, the groundsmen clear the runways of course, but then the snow blows right back on to thr runways again. Its very difficult to keep snow off the runways when it is windy. But, yesterday evening, the condition got much worse. I live pretty much downtown in Cambridge, about 2 miles from the airport. I was walking home last night, and the very first step I took outside on the sidewalk, I nearly bought the farm. The snow had changed to freezing rain, and I could hardly stand up. In that condition, planes need skates, not tires.

Oh yeah, and if you run out of runway at Logan, your passengers are swimming to the terminal. I'd rather divert.

Thanks DLX for that clarification. I remember back in 1982 when a World Airways DC-10 skidded off the runway (I can't recall which one) into Boston Harbor where two people died. It was pretty slick and there were some nasty cross winds. I have heard Logan is one bitch of an airport to land a plane! I've lived in Boston all of my 31+ years of my life and I really was curious why they would close with a minor amount of snow.

Maybe when they announce that they are closing Logan in the future, they should go into more specific detail.

Yes, I was leaving my office yesterday which is on Boston Harbor facing Logan and it was a "tad" cold!
