MDW In Summer?

Wed Mar 03, 2004 4:27 am

I just returned from a MDW-PHX roundtrip, and was wondering how a 757-200, or for that matter a 737-800 can get off the ground at MDW during high density days in the summer. Do they have to fly with less than full passenger loads. Or is there some sort of trick to getting airborne with such little runways.
I did love the ride this last trip on ATA's 757-200. The landing was nice and firm. And the brakes were applied as soon as we touched down. We rolled out from 22L at the last available taxiway.

757-200 and 757-300 are very powerful aircraft and ideally suited to serve MDW. They have no problem taking off fully loaded on the hottest days at MDW. I have watch hundreds of departures at MDW during all weather conditions. On normal days 757s generally only use 3000 or so. On hot days (90+ F) they might use the full length, but rarely.

B738s going to SEA are the only ATA flights I've seen with performance restrictions out of MDW. They are occasionally only booked to 150 or so during the summer to provide some "fudge factor" without impacting customers. Cargo and mail are also tightly controlled to get the aircraft right up against its performance limitations without exceeding them. With the new through flight to HNL, the B752 is being used on more SEA flights this summer -- providing needed capacity as well as better performance.

Any WN types out there? I've often wondered if you guys have the same issues going to the coast out of MDW during the summer (or anywhere else for that matter).
