MAS Expands At Kuching - Incl. Frankfurt!

Wed Mar 03, 2004 8:58 am

Malaysia Airlines has announced that direct Kuching-Frankfurt flights will begin with the new Northern Summer timetable. Operating 3 times a week, the flights will operate via Kuala Lumpur (so presumably its just an extension of the current KL-Frankfurt service) but this is an important step in the battle against Lufthansa's return to Malaysia.

On the cards now is an extension of flights from London-KL-Kuching. Other routes to be established also include a new Kuching-Melbourne service twice weekly to complement the current Kuching-Perth flight and a Kuching-Kota Kinabalu-Xiamen route.

Phew... for a moment I thought MAS was committing corporate suicide by starting a non-stop flight between KUC and FRA! A one stop sounds reasonable.

The MEL flights are in amadeus twice a week non-stop both ways with B777 equipment. However unlike the PER service, these 2 flights will not be linked to KUL. Arr/dep times at MEL are around 0700/0900.
This will give MH 16 services a week into MEL: daily 772 and daily 744 from KUL and these 2 new Kuching connections.

KCH has, if memory serves well, an about 8000ft runway - nonstop ops to FRA would be a problem...

Too bad there's no more non-stop MH service out of KCH to HKG, NRT, SEL etc. It's just BKI that's getting all the actions now. Any chance of these flights making a comeback? But on the plus side KCH has flights to Australia and Europe which BKI hasn't, apart from AO flights.

I'm wondering if MH ever considers returning to MUC?

Yeah I'd like to see MH returning to MUC too. They also used to fly to BRU, MAD & ZAG.

MAS Expansions

Thu Mar 04, 2004 4:56 am

With regards to Europe - I think things are going to stay pretty stagnant for now - with the exception of MAS trying to build up their current services to its current stations.

As MAS works closer with KLM (and perhaps Air France soon) - we may see more off-line stations coming into the schedules - eg. the current Scandinavian link via Amsterdam. Personally, MAS should cooperate with KLM for its UK/Eire services instead of bmi which will actually offer UK/Eire passengers a wider coverage.

MAS is still keen to go 3x daily to LHR and continue building up MAN, CDG and AMS for now. Most of MAS' expansion is going to be on the medium haul sectors - eg India, China, Middle East and other regional destinations.
