WN's Nonstop Services Out Of MSY

Wed Mar 03, 2004 10:40 am

Here is what WN operates weekly N/S service out of New Orleans:

1 Daily to BWI
2 Daily to BHM
2 Daily to DAL
2 Daily to FLL
8 Daily to HOU
1 Daily to IND
1 Daily to LAS
1 Daily to LAX
2 Daily to BNA
1 Daily to OAK
4 Daily to MCO
1 Daily to PHX
1 Daily to SAN
4 Daily to TPA

I am excited to see the N/S services to the west coast cities. In the future I would love to see:

2 Daily to LAX
2 Daily to OAK
2 Daily to SAN

Also, do they (WN) plan to offer N/S or service from MSY to PHL or will they connect through either BNA, BHM, LIT, or SDF?

No MSY-PHL is currently in the works.

I'd personally like to see them offer MDW, PHL, SAT, and possible SEA (though would rather see AS run that one).

ConcordeBoy are you talking about N/S service out of MSY to these destinations by WN.

I STRONGLY agree with you on the AS doing SEA then that could open up the Alaskan market for us.

Actually Cmckeithen, they operate many more flights than what you listed from New Orleans. Try 7 to BHM, 7 to DAL, 20 to HOU, 3 to BNA, 6 to MCO/TPA, and 2 to PHX. All the others are right though. 60 daily nonstops in all. Go to southwest.com for all of the correct listings.

I looked them up in a timetable I got from them on Sunday while waiting for a flight in HOU.

Those 1234567 numbers before the N/S mean something

And when it has 123 567 next to the N/S that means its not a DAILY N/S. Daily = everyday of the week.

For example:

WN flight 675 N/S MSY-HOU does not operate on Saturday yet it does the other days.

Let me ask you something and if you want flying direct with one-stop in TPA. You can change with their planes to MSY and not have access with PHL to MSY either. Not right now for MSY flight. It would able easier way that you can flying out of PHL.

Your post brings up an interesting question for me.

In years past, WN has started some pretty far-out routes (e.g. BHM-SDF, IND-MSY). For whatever reasons, these flights adhered to the standard philosophy of "short hop to let people on, and some off, followed by another short hop".

Do you think this philosophy has changed with the advent of Philly, i.e. more big-market cities connected frequently?

(And why OAK-HOU doesn't exist, I have no idea.)

Actually, MSYtristar's numbers are accurate for weekday non-stop flights; Southwest generally runs fewer flights on weekends since demand from business travelers is lower on Saturday and Sunday.

I am surprised that we haven't seen more BWI-MSY flights, not to mention non-stop MSY-MDW, MSY-AUS, and MSY-SAT.

Weekend service MSY-PVD would do very well, especially for cruise ship passengers from the northeast and the Mardi-Gras crowd!

ScottysAir

I think people may also be able to transfer at MCO if they want to go PHL-MSY.

PHL-MCO is one of the first routes SWA was planning to start with the addition of PHL to the system, right?

I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see a PHL-MSY schedule in a few months or a year maybe.

MSY-AUS/SAT seems eventually likely.

WN has long held out on MSY-MDW; and now that AA/UA have both bumped capacity and frequency on MSY-ORD, makes it even less likely

I dont see MSY-SAT N/S a likely hood. It would be nice, but I don't see it simply because HOU is a hub for WN.

By the way besides DAL and HOU, what are the other hub's for WN? Will PHL become a new one for them?

WN doesnt have hubs, just large operations.

PHX, LAS, and BWI are their largest.

I would like WN to start PVD-MSY and MHT-MSY. I think the market is huge, especially for vacation goers.

The idea of adding MSY-BWI service is right on target. I've seen the O&D numbers, and Southwest can CERTAINLY add additional service between the two cities.

One more N/S route to BWI wont hurt and especially if US Airways goes under, WN more than likely will. Since US offers service into Regan Int'l, I believe that that takes away WN's ability to offer additonal N/S to BWI due to its close proximity to Regan. Only 30mins apart.

MSY's 50 biggest domestic O&D markets as of 2Q03; bold indicates markets with non-stop flights on WN:
HOU/IAH: 1870 daily passengers (in both directions, total)
NYC (EWR/LGA/JFK): 1609
DAL/DFW: 1226 *
ATL: 871
CHI (ORD/MDW): 795
BWI: 727 *
LAX: 690 *
MCO: 635
WAS (DCA/IAD): 560
TPA: 509
PHL: 507
BNA: 413
BOS: 412
LAS: 397
DEN: 371
FLL: 365
SAN: 326
PHX: 299
SEA: 290
SFO: 290
BHM: 288
OAK: 268
MCI: 262
DTW: 255
STL: 253
RDU: 229
SAT: 225
SMF: 222
BDL: 219
MSP: 214
PIT: 192
AUS: 192
JAX: 182
MIA: 179
IND: 168
PDX: 164
CLE: 155
SLC: 150
ORF: 149
CLT: 135
MKE: 135
SJC: 134
ONT: 134
PVD: 123
SDF: 114
CVG: 110
OKC: 110
ABQ: 109
CMH: 107
SNA: 107

Given that probably the minimum O&D traffic to justify a non-stop flight is about 200 both ways per day, it looks like WN does a pretty good job of serving its markets from MSY. The glaring exception is MDW, but this is served by one-stops via BNA, IND, and BHM. STL and DTW have no non-stop service, but hub carriers in each offer non-stops, while Vanguard offered non-stops to MCI until their shutdown. RDU and SAT could probably support non-stop service, though SAT is very well-served to MSY via HOU.

PHL-MSY looks like it would be an excellent market for WN, given its size and only three daily non-stops on US on the route.

kind of immaterial, but SW does serve JAX direct from MSY- just pointing that out in the above reply it is not in bold

Yes to the JAX-MSY route. One daily nonstop in both directions.
