AEROMEXICO´s Fleet

Wed Mar 03, 2004 2:01 pm

Do guys know if AM is already puting out of service the DC9´s?? Im asking this because I just booked a flight from Ciudad Obregon (CEN) to MEX for this month, and they will use the MD88 (CEN-MEX) and MD83 (MEX-CEN)for this flights, and that was a big surprise to me, because they had many years using the DC9´s for this route..
Are they stop using the DC9´s? are they using them for new routes? what other changes are going on with the introduction of the 737??

All I know is that the whole (McDonnell) Douglas family is going to be replaced (over the course of many years, of course) by 73W's. I guess that AM obviously chose to phase the DC-9's out first because they are older than the MD-8x's. I don't know if AM would consider planes smaller than the 737NG (i.e., 736's, 717's or even ERJ's) too.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

ElPelon,

You can check on AM's website to see how many DC-9's are left. But I believe there are only 5 still in use.

ElPelon,

The website says AM has 8 DC9's currently in use.

But aren't they still adding MD-87's to the fleet? It looks to me that the 87 will fly so more years with them.

717fan, now that I think about it, since the MD-87's seat less passengers than the other MD-8x's that AM operates, perhaps that could be the case if AM wants to have a smaller aircraft type for low density routes, especially since AM is not in a position to acquire/lease so many new aircraft. Let's see what happens. According to what I have read in a.net, AM's ultimate wish in terms of fleet is to have an all-73G narrowbody fleet but this, of course, will take a very long time. In addition, it makes me wonder whether they will consider in the future replacing the 752's with 738's and 739's.

According to what I have been told by some AM friends, the 737-700 was brought as a substitution of the older MD80's, some of which are in their early twenties right now. The DC-9 is older than that, of course, and that is why newer MD87s are arriving. That makes perfect sense to me, as they both have pretty much the same seating capacity and can cater the same markets.

True that AM will keep their MD's for some time to come, until they get totally phased out by 737-800 and -900 which they have options with Boeing for (I don't remember if both series or which of them).

Of course, no one really knows what will happen with the airlines in Mexico, so these plans might have been already changed several times.

Saludos.

What is weird to me, is that for the CEN-MEX route they are using the MD88 and MD83 and those planes are much bigger than the DC9 or MD87.. If they were using the MD87 instead of the DC9 that would had made sense to me.. But I think the MD88 is really big airplane for this route.. Actually I think that this will be the biggest airplanes at CEN ever.. And I really doubt that this will be profitable to AM.. But as you said no body knows what is really going on in AM.
