Mandarin Air MD11 Crash In 1999

Wed Mar 03, 2004 8:24 pm

I watched a video of this crash and noticed something interesting. On airdisaster.com they say that the plane banked to the right (during the severe storms going on at that time) and struck the ground with it's right wingtip. Well, if you watch this video you'll see that the right wingtip is clearly not hitting the ground at all, it just seems like the plane explodes all of a sudden. Very interesting. What do ya'll think about this?

Thought exactly the same thing, the right wing tip isn't anywhere near the ground....and you can see it is level with the left wing tip until impact...

I think the right wing dips at the last minute. I've seen the film clip and I know what you mean, it looks like a stabilised approach but the people in the car (can be heard on soundtrack) seem to think it's a bit crazy. Sure it looks like the plane lands normally and then blows up but even the MD11 isn't that dodgy - the wingtip digs in, fuel tanks open, fire starts, plane flips over.

Have also seen the video, could it be the engine that hits first?

The only explanation to the wing impact theory i could think of is that the right wing hits something else than the ground because you can absolutely tell that it is level when the fireball erupts! There is no question about that...either that or i'm blind or the clip is tampered with.

What i was thinking if the plane just burst into fire without the wing hitting anything was that if the decent rate was so high at the touchdown that it somehow ruptured the center fuel tank (there's a center main gear on the MD11 remember)....or something. Either way it is of no real importance but i'm just up to speculation i guess. =)

No, it definitely hit right wing first. The centre tank blowing up (which didn't happen, at least not at the beginning of the crash sequence) wouldn't cause the plane to roll upside down and complete the ground run sliding on it's roof. They hit right wing down, the whole bloody wing came off, and over they went, just like in the Poseidon Adventure.

What if it hit the ground so hard the right gear gave way making the wing hit the ground?

N754pr: watching the video several times, I think you're right. watch the descent rate until about a second to touchdown and it seems that the plane really "fell" to the ground from like 15 to 20m - the wings are still level until the right wing tank/engine explode and only then you see the left wingtip going up in the air......

According to this report:

http://www.iasa-intl.com/folders/belfast/131003/MandarincrashMD-11.htm

... the aircraft landed heavily (aircraft itself at near MLW, high sink rate) on the right main landing gear and starboard engine. The right landing gear failed and the wing detached. The video clip seems to agree with that.

BTW, thanks Mika for bringing up the topic with the video link.
