How Does Ferrari Fly?

Thu Mar 04, 2004 3:36 am

Anybody knows what cargo airline Ferrari uses to fly from Bologna airport to transport around the world their F1 cars? Alitalia Cargo? Thx Smile

I thought the FIA charter cargo aircraft and move all F1 cars and equipment
together to the long haul races - otherwise its road were possible as it costs so much to fly all the stuff!

Thats what McLaren's Racing Line magazine said anyway.

If I recall correctly MH was going to be the official airline of FIA.
Maybe that has changed though.
Where have all the tri-jets gone...

I am surprised European don't fly the F1 stuff around considering Paul Stoddart's link between the airline and Minardi F1 team. Infact I am sure I have seen a photo of one of his 747's with a few F1 cars next to it.

Are you sure? I am 99% sure they don't. The FIA ship them along with all the teams equipment, tires, fuel - the lot. It takes around 7 747's for each race. I am sure I have seen an article on it. I will dig around.

Everytime after the F1 GP the Ferrari's F1 cars go back at Maranello (20km out of Bologna for tests). A Ferrari statment said Schumacher and Barrichello they were both flying to Australia with their race cars in advance to other teams. That's all.

That may help a bit! Not what Ive seen though.

I'll keep digging.

And to correct my previous statement: Its 3 747's, not 7!

I think thats probably a bit misleading. I would imagine that means just the drivers flew out in advance.

Because of the huge cost of flying the stuff, its all done together. After all, Ferrari have nothing to gane by flying out their cars early - unless they did it for PR reasons - but one would imagine the cost of that would not be worth it.

Of course, if there is anyone here can prove me wrong - do so! Smile

I think that your opinion regarding cost is absolutely right.

Your welcome VCE!

However, I have proved myself wrong!
You are right according to this article, Ferrari are the only team who fly their own stuff to the 'flyaways'.

http://www.usgpindy.com/news/story.php?story_id=1977

I will now go away and hide in shame of been wrong and arguing I was right! Embarrassment

I guess Ferrair must just charter their own aircraft, maybe AZ's. Perhaps someone else here may know that.

Adam

Also, good luck to Mclaren and Kimi Raikkonen this week in Oz! Big grin

.P.S. Id like to think your wrong about Ferrari winning all this year...but its quite likely they will!  Sad I hope its Mclaren's year again though, its been awhile since those days when Hakkinen won his championships!

I believe Ferrari used LH Cargo at some point. No idea what they use nowadays. Schumacher used to fly Swissair according to a newspaper article but now has his own jet.

Actually if you take those cars and place the spoilers looking down instead of up they would take off under their own power!  Nuts

Especially because I don't care for M. Schumacher too much! Yeah, go ahead, blast me!

Here is an article from the Herald Sun that has a picture of the cars being unloaded in Melbourne http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,8839998%255E11088,00.html . Keener eyes than mine might be able to spot the airline. The article does state that they were delayed in Singapore. It also the F1 circus moves more equipment than any other sporting event.

I don't think anyone could tell from that photo.

It just looks like a 747 freighter.

Adam,

good to know someone agrees with me, better yet because no one has blasted us for insulting the god-almighty Michael.
Just hoping for a better season from Raikkonen and Montoya.....

By the way, no way you can tell what airline that plane belongs to....

Adam, do you still belive that McLaren could win? Big thumbs up

I think that right now Schumacher and Barrichello are flying back to Bologna.. but what's going to expect them? BLQ airport is working at 40% after another snowstorm:D

VCE: Don't!!! The GP is a sore point with me, I got out of bed at silly AM (something like 2am) to watch a McLaren blow up a handful of laps into the race - not too impressed! Just wait for Malaysia, Bahrain.... Smile

I would imagine Schumacher and Barrichello have some type of Business jet or private aircraft to fly them back - rather than a commercial flight. Perhaps they will just land or divert. Its a long flight after all, and when they get to BLQ it may not be as bad.
