What Is The Longest Runway In The World?

Thu Mar 04, 2004 4:27 am

I was wondering what is the longest runway in the world, excluding area 51's!

I will go out on a limb and say Edwards Air Force base in California...landing spot for the Space Shuttle. Could be wrong though.

I'm guessing Andrews AFB.

The answer, so far as commercial usage goes, is Ulyanovsk-Vostochny International Airport (Russia) at 16,404ft

The longest runway in the world was just opened at DEN about 10months ago. I will try to find out how long it is. I also believe it is the widest runway in the world too. This alowes planes to land in the snow and with heavy wind.

Question, do some of you people actually read the above posts, or just scroll down and post the first tripe that comes to mind....?

This has been bought up a few time. Technically is Edwards AFB. Its roughly 7 miles long. Andrews and Kennedy are not close to that. The longest in the USA commercially is DIA, the new runway is 16,000ft. Its also the longest for a major airport from what I am aware of. Ulyanovsk is damn long though and last I heard was the longest in Europe/Asia/Middle East.

I knew and confirmed that in Florida we have one of the longest runways in the world, at the Kennedy Space Centre. But I found that according to Encyclopedia.com (http://www.encyclopedia.com/html/E/EdwardsA1.asp) Edwards AFB has the longest runway, that we know of at least.

I don't know for certain, but I would not be surprised if the Russian runway mentioned is indeed the longest paved.

I think Edwards AFB is the longest runway, but only the 15,000 feet or so is paved, the rest is dry lake bed. And the lake bed is only usable certain times of year. From what I've heard (from a guy that worked at NASA Dryden FRC) during monsoon season, the lake bed gets some water in it and makes it very slick for several months at a time. Maybe somebody else could elaborate on this.

The longest runway would technically most likely go to Edwards AFB, with Runway 17/35 measuring in at 39,097 x 900. This runway however, is not paved so that is always open to interpretation.

Fairford in the UK is the 2nd longest runway due to it being the only other other runway suitable and ontrack for the space shuttle to land on if it misses Edwards.

I've never heard of Fairford being an alternate landing site - NASA's site mentions several Transoceanic Alternate (TAL) and secondary alternate sites, including:

  • White Sands, New Mexico USA

  • Elmendorf AFB, Alaska USA

  • Anderson AFB, Guam

  • Yokota Air Base, Japan

  • Ben Guerir Air Base, Morocco

  • Banjul International Airport, Gambia

  • Zaragoza Air Base, Spain

  • Moron Air Base, Spain

  • Can you provide a link that shows Fairford being used as an alternate site?

I know one of BOG's is 12,467. I think it's 13L. 13,100 is the length of La Paz's, in Bolivia. I guess it's due to the lack of oxigen at that altitude, BOG being at 2600m and La Paz even higher.

I'll quote my 1998 record book (it's old, so what?)

    Longest runway

"The runway at Edwards AFB measures 37,676 feet (7.13 miles) long"

Civil: "The runway at Pierre van Ryneveld Airport, Upington, South Africa, is 3.04 miles long. It was constructed in 5 months from Aug. 1975 to Jan. 1976."

Anybody have a newer edition? Don't bother looking in the silver hard-covered one, but in the normal chubby brown-paper and softcovered one; it's much more complete.

And yes I ALWAYS read all the posts, provided there are less than 100.

The longest runway in South America is not in Brazil nor Argentina nor Colombia etc but on Easter Island, Chile. It was paid for by the US for emergency space shuttle landings, though I doubt it has ever been used for that purpose.

How long is Area 51's runway? I recall hearing that it was around 9 miles long or something ridiculous like that. I'm sure though that all of the 9 miles or however long it is, is not fully paved.

The really long runway at Edwards AFB is used for testing new aircraft. You might as well have plenty of error room in case the brakes don't work as well as they thought.  Wink/being sarcastic

As far as I know, the space shuttle can land at any airport with a runway over 12,000 feet.

Not that DEN will ever see an A-380, but at least they planned ahead. The temps and density altitude certainly make the added length a necessity, esp with the bizarre wind out there on the prairie.

The paved length of the Area 51 runway is 11,700 ft. The rest of the length is unpaved, on the lake bed to the north. The old runway at Area 51 was over 12,000 ft, but it's been taken out of service.

No, the A380 will at most require as much runway as current large aircraft (747-400). It will also make less noise than the 747-400 and have a shorter exhaust plume than the 777.

Rebuilding taxiway corners for the A380 is one thing, but most airports would not lengthen runways for just one type.

Why will DEN never get an A380? If FedEx or UPS start flying cargo in it they sure will. We have the AN 124 here all the time and I know for a fact during the busy times of the year UPS flies 747's here throughout the day. DEN also has many international flights throughout the day. I am sure that we will see A380 service here a few times. If DEN can fill numerous 747's to the same location there is no reason that an A380 couldnt be used on the same route.
