Will The 7E7 Be 787?

Thu Mar 04, 2004 7:34 am

Does anyone know, or believe, that the 7E7 will become the 787?

I think it's highly unlikely that it will become the 787. Boeing has already been showing TV ads with the 7E7 name.

I'm willing to bet it won't stay the 7E7 (I don't know about everyone else here, but that sounds like more of a drawing board type name to me), but I don't think it'll stay a member of the 7-7 line. Maybe Boeing'll try something new, like the 807, since this is a big departure from the style of jets that they have been building for some 40+ years.

I think I too would not place this in the 7 hundred series of aircraft, but adopt something new.

Give the perception of something much more advanced then it's competion, It would be harder to do that with the old system.

I think they'll stick with 7E7. This designation is a departure from the usual numerical system (=this plane is different) BUT at the same time retains the trademark 7_7 Boeing brand (=this plane is built with experience). The "E" also hits on the 21st century E trend... email, etrade, ebay, etc.

Considering that it's still a tube with semi-swept wings.... exactly what about it is such a "big departure"?

As far I can remember even Airbus did TV adds with the A3xx, now 380, But somehow, the 7E7 has already got the status of a brandname "to challenge Airbus", so I think they will stay, too  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Adding to CONCORDEBOY's criticism of the 7E7 being a "big departure". If you think the 7E7 is a "big departure" no doubt you thought the 747 was a big departure when it came out.... but the 747 did not get a special designation.

Please...why would the 7E7 become the 808? It would have to be the 8E8. It will be the 787...believe...it will not remain 7E7..the E stands for experimental...traditionally with every aircraft. BTW, I read a long time ago, at the immediate initiation, is that the aircraft will become the 787, if it was not a guarantee, it was highly favored over the 808. The 808 should come after the 787 and the 797 are introduced. No need to skip...besides, I think, looking at the image of the jet, the designation '787' fits it. I pray to God it becomes the 787. Tradition!!!!! Tradition!!!!!  Big thumbs up

This is one of the few times I agree with ConcordeBoy. The aircraft is still a tube with wings. Nothing radical about it.
I've also seen the ads that Boeing is showing. "7E7 Dreamliner". This is just an attempt to pique one's interest. IMO, I think the aircraft will be known as the 787. After all, the "E" could stand for "Eight". Regards.

from what I've heard, the E stands for Economical. After all, that's the major design goal, to build the most economical aircraft possible. But all other theories are probably accurate. Eight, E-business... I'd like to see it as 787. Tradition!

Check this out:

That "E" can stand for Experience, Eight, Economical, Enhanced, Elite, Experimental, Ebusiness, Express, Expertise, Excellence, Etc and Etc. Maybe some of the mature folks that have been around for years in the Aviation Industry may look back at how Boeing used to name, say, the 777 or 767. This might bring some answers.

Greetings!

As pointed out in another thread here about the B-757, it was originally known as the 7N7. The "E" stands for "Efficient" which is the big selling point of the aircraft to the airlines - the fuel Efficiency of the aircraft.

As for my two cents worth, it will become the 787 when a launch customer finally comes forward for it.

the "E" could also stand for exception

I never said it was set in stone. It could well be the 787, it would be the logical thing to do. There has been some speculation about the 808 though.

You guys seen the wind test model? It's a 777-100 with those odd wingtips, nothing more. I wouldn't be suprised if the final version to be marketed looks like it. All those "wetliner" artist conception shots are a lot of hype, in my opinion. Maybe they should market it as the "Save our Butts Special" cause that's what they really need...
