Virgin USA Potential Routes?

Thu Mar 04, 2004 9:27 am

So I understand if Virgin USA selects BOS as the initial hub & HQ it will be picking up some USAir North/South routes. But does anyone have any ideas about what routes they might run if they choose SFO?

I'm sure LAS and New Orleans will be one of the first routes from wherever the hub is. SRB loves vacation destinations.

I could definitley see MIA-BOS. This is a route screaming for lowfare service. American Airlines has a monopoly, even though three airlines, Song, American, and jetBlue, compete on FLL-BOS.

Perhaps every city that has a Virgin Megastore?  Smile

In all seriousness, you can bet that most major business/leisure destinations will see at least some VirginUS service. Just connect the dots.

I am not holding my breath for an IAH or HOU service. Hell we don't even have a 'Megastore'.

Doubtful. Since Virgin USA will want to be a low cost, low fare carrier, they'll compete directly against CO. CO and VS are partners because CO doesn't have LHR access....

TOL tommy, are you sure about that? I thought it was more because VS didnt have EWR access.

If they do base themselves at BOS, I would expect to see a BOS - SEA flight to compete with AA & AS on this route.

Just my $0.02.

As it obviously can't be 100% foreign owned, anyone know how SRB is going to go about finding American majority owners for Virgin USA?

I have heard that BOS might be the HQ, but not the hub. BOS does not have the room to support anything more than a small carrier with a few flights never mind a medium/large operation with multiple departures that require any number of gates. BOS, geographically, is a poor hub location in the sense of connecting traffic. I would be VERY surprised if it is chosen as the 'hub." There's just NO room at all...

They don't want a hub, they are aiming to be a Point to Point airline. I expect them to move into one of the few major cities without a major loco presence (Charlotte, Pittsburgh perhaps). I can't wait to see what amenities they have.

From what I have heard... one of the big reasons SFO is in contention is that we have an entire vacant, ready-for-use terminal they could use as a hub (Terminal 2/Old International Terminal).

Wilco have you been over to T2 lately? Its not even close to being ready to use. The airport will have to put a lot of money that it does not have to get that dark whole up and running. Rumor around SFO is that they will be using the International terminal concourse A.

No... haven't been over to T2 lately. I meant the space was built (as opposed to new construction that might be needed at BOS).

On another totally different note... wsup As739x... wilco=your AS SFOBR friend... hey, there is a thread about your 777UAL pic you took... search for this "Intake Or Exhaust On The 777" Congrats!

Personally, I could totally see them connecting together the Virgin Atlantic destinations, ie Boston, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Orlando. Then from there adding maybe ORD (a former VS destination), LAS, TPA, and MIA

I LOVE EWR... I think there are probably a good 10,000+ furloughed airline employees who would care quite a bit if a new airline was HQed in their area.

Very true, but if Virgin does come to America they will select the state/city that offers the best deal to them. Also I do feel for the 10,000+ furloughed employees however the could always relocate or work for the closest Virgin USA base to their respective homes.

That might be a mute point as Richard would bring in his own managers as well to handle the company he wants to form in the US.

I know its about a year or more off, but BOS will have ALOT of gates in Terminal C opening when Terminal A is reopened and I can't see any other airline that is ready to jump on those open gates.

I LOVE EWR... good point... I did read somewhere (San Francisco Chronicle maybe) that one of the many ways Branson expects to suceed is by being able to tap into the good aviation "talent" in the US that can work for cheap. (i.e. those furloughed employees)

So heres a new idea, what about Orlando as a hub. We just got our new 4th runway. I knows its too far south but you never know.

No, when it comes to Branson, you really don't...and nothing surprises me any more! And amazingly, I came across this article about 15 minutes after reading your post...
