Star Alliance Welcomes SAA (South African Airways)

Fri Mar 05, 2004 10:04 am

It's official - SAA will be joining Star Alliance. They gonna make the official announcement in June.

It's published on Star Alliance's website: http://www.staralliance.com/

Heres an extract:

FRANKFURT — March 4, 2004 — Star Alliance™, the airline network for Earth, today welcomed South African Airways' decision to pursue membership in Star Alliance.

"We are always interested in adding quality airlines to our alliance, particularly those which already have long-standing and successful relationships with our member carriers," said Jaan Albrecht, CEO, Star Alliance. "South African Airways is the most prestigious carrier in Africa and will significantly enhance our network across the continent and beyond. It's good for customers, good for South African Airways and it's good for Star Alliance."

Albrecht said Star Alliance member carriers will be looking forward to making an official announcement at the next Star Alliance Chief Executive Board meeting in June.

hmmm, this must have been why I have heard so many rumours the last few months about SAA coming to YYZ. Lets hope they actually fly it instead of codeshare on a new AC flt, it would be nice to have them in Toronto for the yyzspotters.

Cheers,
Kaz

With so many rumours about possible new members in all 3 alliances, it's hard sometimes to separate between fact and fiction. Good that it's all in black & white now.

Well that's fantastic news for Star Alliance members in New Zealand.

Hopefully NZ will codeshare with them via Australia and give QF stronger competition. And maybe some better priced packages to Africa are in the pipeline?!

And how about an Australian domestic start-up funded by Star member airlines, particularly the ones that fly to Australia - South African, Air New Zealand, United, Air Canada, Asiana, Singapore, Thai, Austrian, Lufthansa - and resurrect Ansett!

That's a bit premature, I have seen an email from the CEO of SAA dated yesterday where he states that SAA have APPLIED to join Star, and Lufthansa will be sponsoring the application.

It ain't official till it's signed!
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Andz - possibly its not all signed, but its not likely Star is going to tell SAA to go away, is it ? I think we can take it as read that the "application" will be approved.

dear andz!

to my knowledge there has been so far one case, where an airline switched alliances! this case was when AUSTRIAN AIRLINES (in 2000) turned its back on Swiss Air dominated Qualiflyer group, exited the group and joined the Star-Alliance.

btw. Swiss Intl. is joining 1-world, but I'm not sure if this should be compared!

regards

Andz,
Mexicana recently dropped the Star Alliance for One World or maybe just a codeshare w/ American/Iberia.

Don't expect MX to become a oneworld member. At least not in the short term. So far, MX has only entered into codeshare agreements with AA and IB but has expressed its commitment to continue its codeshares with LH, RG and AC (the LH agreement was extended for a number of years just a few days ago).
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738
