Well, if you are interested in statistics, here's one for you.

In order for you to be involved in a plane crash, you would have to board one flight a day, every day, for 21,000 years. Even then, odds are, you would survive.

First of all, try and calm down. The chances of your aircraft experiencing ANY type of mid-air calamity are highly improbable. If a window seat makes you feel uncomfortable, try to be seated in the middle aisle seats. You will barely notice you are off the ground. I also recommend going up to see the pilots and asking any questions that might be bothering you. It will make you appreciate how hard the people up front are trying to make your flight as smooth and comfortable as possible. I would also recommend trying to sleep during the flight, and listen to music you find relaxing. Take a good book along, one that will take your mind off of being in the air. Also, don't dwell on the thought of crashing, that only makes things worse. Try and think of how enjoyable the flight will be. I hope this helps, also remember the old saying:

"Getting there is half the fun."

You really have nothing to worry about. The pilots are highly trained and know how to deal with the worst.

To just become an airline pilot you have to spend years, if not decades, training. However, once you make it to the airlines the pressure never dies. Every six months or sooner the pilot has to take a "proficiency check." What that means is that he/she gets thrown in the simulator not knowing what to expect. Sometimes the check is a normal uneventful flight, but sometimes it's the flight from hell when everything goes wrong. If he/she fails this, then that individual goes in for recurrent training. Then upon completing this, he/she takes the sim check again and if he/she passes then that person flys with the Chief Pilot. If he/she passes, then that person can fly the line!

The aircraft is built to take loads that are 4 times that of the weight. The 777 wings have been tested to actually fold above the aircraft and not break off! This wouldn't happen in real life, but it's nice to know. In addition that aircraft can do barrel rolls and come back for more! No pilot in his/her right mind is going to flip a 747 on it's back. I'm a pilot myself and I fear aerobatic maneuvers. I can't go on roller-coasters for that reason.

Any turbulance can be classified as "potholes in the road."

You really have nothing to fear! So enjoy!

Hang on a second....

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this posting is a joke.

First, what kind of person (especially a woman) gives thenselves the screen name "lecrack"? The Crack?

Secondly, what kind of 24 year old spells like that?

And last, just think about it...

Hey Lecrack, take it easy!

1) Planes don't fall out of the sky for no reason. The fact that its wings create lift is an aerodynamic principle that has been established time and time again.

2) The pilots have different meals that the rest of the passengers, so I highly doubt that half of the passengers and the pilots are going to conk out because of bad fish.

3) Don't believe those "Oh my God the plane is going to crash" Hollywood movies. It's fiction, not reality.

4) Pilots have to go through psycological tests and if even one goes crazy, there are at least two more pilots that can handle the situation.

5) The media exploits all aviation related problems, always making it 10 times worst that it really is.

6) There is PLENTY of alcohol on the plane.

7) Turbulence is like driving a car on a bumpy road, just think of it that way.

So RELAX and enjoy flying on that big, silver bird.

Strangely enough, being a geologist has prepaed me to answer one of these questions. Airplane wings develop lift due to a force defined by the Bernoulli Equation, which is P+Pfgy+(PfU^2/2)=C. What this basically means is that if a fluid (gas or liquid) of a certain density and pressure moves over a surface, then it develops less pressure as it travels more in the same time period. an aircraft wing has a flat undersurface (which at high AOA can also be used as a kite) that is a shorter distance that the chord across the top surface. Since the top surface air has to travel farther than the bottom surface to get over the wing in the same time period, the pressure is reduced, and suction (lift) ensues. Strangely, this is also partly why rivers are so murky.

One thing you have to keep in mind : when you're onboard and after taking off, you can't do anything else than :
- stress to whole flight
- relax
Make your choice!

Just A Thought

Wed Jan 26, 2000 10:56 pm

HA! I'm sorry I just got in the door now. I would have loved to have jumped in on this one earlier to shut this joker down. Be careful, some of you guys out there. You have to have bullshit radar turning when you're on a forum like this. I wouldn't put this past, you know who, since he likes to use the forum as his own personal entertainment center when he's not busy posting his latest asinine observation about latest dumbass thought.

Everybody:

Hmmmm... - This user has a valid email address and even a homepage, so unless this is a very elaborate hoax, 'Lecrack' is probably not the user we all so love to hate. But you never know!

Authority - Everybody is entitled to have whatever screenname they want. If you check out her homepage, I think you'll see why she chose that name!   And yes, and the way she spells might be off, but remember, alot of non-english speaking people frequent this forum. Their 'english' is pidgin at best!

Lecrack - To answer your question, the safest place to sit is in a seat above the wing. And yes, people have survived crashes. Most crashes happen either on takeoff or landing. Remember the United Airlines DC-10 that crashed in Sioux City a few years ago? More people survived that crash than died!

Most people who die in 'survivable' crashes die of smoke inhalation or fire. If you want to increase your chances, there are some companies that sell a 'smoke hood' that you put over your head in case of an emergency. It gives you about five minutes worth of oxygen (I think) and protects you eyes on alungs from the smoke and carbon monoxide. They go for $50-$100. And don't wear flammable clothing!

All of the above are fine, as long as you're not on Korean Air. I hear their seat back cards have prayers on them......

thanks to those who replied , i used to love to fly as a kid and i dont know what came over me these past few years yes i do watch movies and i have vivid nightmares of flying and crashing, so to me this is very real. the whole airplane movie referencing is really just an example (on a lighter note) that even though people joke of crashing and things that if i were actually in a situation like that i dont think it would be very funny. i have never flown this far before so .....

But Seriously....

Well, a couple suggestions for a long flight: concentrate on watching the movie they'll show. Sit in the center section if its a wide-body. Read. Sleep. It will all help take your mind off the fact that you are flying.

Some people get really drunk in the airport before the flight, but I think there are more constructive ways to take your mind off it.

Flying can still be as much fun as you remember it used to be.

The Only Thing That Will Make You Crazy

Fri Jan 28, 2000 3:17 am

The only thing that will make you crazy is sheer bordom. Trust me, even I got bored and restless on flights.

The bland elevator music they have on the inflight music sucks (pardon my French). Yanni just doesn't cut it for me. The inflight movies are the ones that I would never watch... yes, I know bit-h, bit-h, bit-h...

I always been a novel with me, if I buy the crappy ones at the airport.

Or you just start a conversation with the person next to you...

Some Cheap Advise

Fri Jan 28, 2000 4:56 am

stay up 24 hours before you hit the plane pop a couple of gravol pills or some other mild sedative drink about four liters of water or bring it with you and I garontee that the only thing you'll remember is your ass hiten the seat before take-off and the nice flight attendant person nudging you awake to let you know you've arrived.

No offence, maybe you are serious but your website depicts a hidden agenda. Ironic you are travelling Virgin, the shagadellic airline to Austin Powers .
Well boys she's all yours! By the way here's a fact for you Ms. crack; a person has more of a chance of being kicked in the head by a mule and dying than being killed in a plane crash. So get on that plane and enjoy your trip

Nothing is gonnna happen, after the flight you'll be happy and enjoying to fly.
BTW, the movie airplane is fake, it's like a comic, it makes people laugh.

Have a great trip.

Oh grow up the lot of you - as this person should be aware all the major carriers will give advice and assistance to those with a fear of flying. Get in touch with Virgin and I am sure that they will be more than happy to help with your fear whether imagined or not.

All you gotta do is get on the airplane and shut up and sit there and the people upp front who know what they are doing will get you to your destination. Just sit there and you will find that it is no different than being on a bus. It is SAFE, do'nt worry about it. Mega millions of people have been in airplanes and nothing has happened to them. I thought that you were phony, but people keep replying to you so I will go along with them. Just sit in your seat and you will be taken into the air, read your book, and you will be at your destinationbefore you know it. It really IS magic, every time I fly I tell myself
WOW! aand that's the way you should look at it. SAFER than being in the car that takes you to the airport. I do hope that when you have done your flight that you will let us know how it went. Bon Voyage....... Peter.
