When Is US Airways Entering Star Alliance?

Fri Mar 05, 2004 9:29 pm

In the press release announcing their forthcoming membership on May 31, 2003, they mentioned it would be "in the next 9 to 12 months". Any news? Or has Star lost interest in US given its economic woes?

US is still planning on entering Star later this spring / summer. There is no indication that they won't join Star. Their most recent press release acknowleged that they are planning on painting planes in the Star livery...

I'd think they (USAirways) would be too busy preparing for ch.7, than worrying about joining an alliance. What advantage (for anyone) would this provide? Possibly a few more agonizing months of hardship. A few more months of labor disputes and uncertainty. Sounds like a winner!

Lufthansa is going to introduce flights or already has from Munich to Charlotte, which is one of US Airways' hub. I think they are definitely going to join Star Alliance.

Please understand that I'm a huge fan of Star Alliance, but it must be mentioned that it looks like an airline rehab clinic!

AC, UA and US all have had such drama financially speaking, plus Ansett is no longer! Ironic that it's still the largest global network! Perhaps miraculous??

just my 2 cents

AC, UA and US all have had such drama financially speaking,

That aint the half of it...

RG had its flagship aircraft seized, then cancelled outstanding orders
NH cant turn an int'l profit
NZ aint in the best shape, but doing better
UA, no comment
US, refer to previous comment
AC is limping along with its government crutch
...etc

When you think about it though, a lot of major airlines have had some bad times in the past years. Most US carriers after Sept. 11, Most Asian carriers after SARS, etc. It is not just the airlines in the Star Alliance. But even after all of these tourism problems, the airlines are still recording profits, you just have to wait and see with an airline, anything can change their financial status at any given moment. It only seems like Star Alliance airlines are doing it tough because the have major airlines that mainly fly to the US and Asia and surrounding areas.

This came in my recent Airpoints update from NZ:

Air New Zealand is a member of the Star Alliance, made up of 15 member airlines from around the world. On 31 March this year one of those airlines, Mexicana, is leaving the Star Alliance. The good news is that they will remain an Airpoints programme partner. So although you won’t earn Status Credits or have your Air New Zealand or Star Alliance status recognised, you’ll still be able to earn and use your Airpoints on Mexicana flights.

As one airline leaves, another one arrives and in the next few months, US Airways will be joining the Star Alliance. So look forward to being able to earn and redeem Airpoints and Status Credits with yet another member of the Star Alliance network.

When Is US Airways Entering Star Alliance?

Hopefully before they join the B. E. P. Alliance (Braniff-Eastern-Pan Am)!

Yet another carrier Star Alliance partner, bmi, are making relatively large losses at present.

Ah yes, and don't forget about SAS which has trouble of its own, also Austrian, and so is Thai (less dramatic though). In a nutshell, the only more or less healthy carriers in Star are LH (so so...) and SQ.

Is SA almost bankrupt as well or what criteria do they fulfill to become a member?

People here love to dance on the grave of a company that, last I checked, was not even in bankruptcy! (unlike UA or AC!). Relax people. We all know US is having tough times, but they've been pushing forward a lot longer than some of the "experts" on this website have predicted...

AC is limping along with its government crutch

Air Canada has not received anything from the government. They are working out their problems by themselves.
