EMA News?

Sat Mar 06, 2004 2:53 am

I know the Amritsar, India flight has been upgraded to twice weekley, but is there any news on baby pulling out (heres to hoping), easy expanding (yeah right. never happen) and new airlines starting up new routes.

Ryanair are strongly rumoured to be starting a base at EMA for the winter season, start up destinations are possibly Dublin, Girona and Rome. Easyjet also rumoured to be expanding at EMA atlast, no destinations confirmed but Copenhagen, Paris and Amsterdam have been mentioned.

As for bmibaby, well they have only introduced one new route, to Bordeaux this summer. With them now having 4 bases, and new LGW operations, their fleet is gettin spread rather thinly, with priority on expansion appearing to be at Manchester.

Hope some of this materialises, EMA needs to maintain its growth and attract a wider range of airlines.

Mark, had read on pprune about FR but then people went a bit sceptic when ever mentioning FR starting at EMA stating that it would never happen. I would personally like to see FR compete with baby and Easy then expand and overtake baby as the No.1 airline at EMA

bmibaby seem to be losing the plot by the month so who knows what they will do...

As for EZY there are rumours of expansion, but the 7 based a/c by Summer this year seems now to be unlikely / impossible so who knows. We hear so many rumours of new bases and routes and so few of them actually materialise that I really can't predict with any certainty.

As with so many airlines, you will all know about it before us employees anyway  Insane

I hope Easyjet go and Ryanair come! Easyjet - makes me laugh! How dare they call themselves a 'low-cost airline'? Big grin For a flight to and from France in May - U2: £826, FR - £492.

DC-10,

Have you been checking out the tiny fares from baby recentley?????? Easy beat them on every single route that they compete on for much of the year. baby can go for me and easy can get some expanding done.

Rick, do you know if BY will bother operating Long Hauls from EMA in the near future apart from the cruise runs to Barbados, New Orleans and Acapulco??

I agree, Bmibaby have some of the highest fares I've seen for a so called low cost carrier. Whenever I've looked into flying with them I find its usually cheaper to fly bmi mainline from Heathrow on the same dates. If Ryanair do come I hope it'll give baby a kick up the backside and get them to lower their fares.

Unfortunately nothing planned this Summer apart from the usual sunspots, so I doubt it even next year. At least you get some 763s until mid-June, and 762s all season, not just the 757s.

This is only my opinion...

It wouldn't surprise me if easyJet pulled out of EMA, since they took over Go they have not annonced any future growth there while all of there other UK bases have seen some sort of growth.

Im not sure if EMA plays part of there future growth, I know LTN is 70miles down the M1 but I think this may step on some of EMA's catchment area from passengers for example in the south midlands and northern home counties.

What are the passenger load factors like from EMA for easyJet and how any aircraft do they have based there?

From what I read BMI Baby are expanding at MAN. This gives them a bigger catchment area, and could eat into FR and Easyjet at LPL. Maybe they aren't so dumb afterall.

Any chance of charter flights to Egypt from this airport. It has suprised me that this airport operates none. Is there any reason?

They probably wouldnt fill a flight from EMA to Egypt, hence why I think the only Egypt charter flights are from LGW,MAN and BHX(?).

I agree with Gkirk, and BHX i think only get a weekly Luxor flight in the summer even tho i am not sure wether this has been discontinued.

We need a new carrier at the airport offering some flights to Germany. Its the only major country not served from EMA that all other airports have services to.

Glasgow doesnt have services to Germany. Rumours are that HLX will launch more UK destinations in addition to MAN and NCL. (GLA or EDI are possibilities)

If Ryanair did decide to come to EMA, would they offer routes to Germany? I don't think there will be a flight from EMA to anywhere in Egypt - I don't think they could fill a flight. But saying that - I never thought there would be a flight to India. Then Monarch came along - now are there two flights daily?

Gkirk

During the summer of 2003 Lotus-Spirit of Egypt operated chater flights to Sharm El Sheikh and Luxor using A320s from EMA, Birmingham and Glasgow. I think they plan to do so this summer too, so there must be demand.

BDRules

Are you sure the Luxor flights are during the summer, they usually operate during the winter peak season, or has it become year round like their Wednesday LGW and MAN flights.

Poss winter flights from BHX to Luxor. I was down in SSH last July and was hot but can understand why a lot of people wouldnt want to be there because of the heat.

EMA havent had any flights to Egypt last summer either and there are no schedules for this year either.

In regards to FR offering Germany flights if they came to EMA, HHN has been mentioned as a poss route.

Ryanair could possibly start flights to link EMA with their European Hubs but 8 based a/c for a new base? Doubtful...

Has bmi ever operated EMA-FRA, I thought it may have since FRA is the hub of main Star Alliance partner LH.

Yes bmi have operated the EMA - FRA route with F100's but stopped back in 1999 or 2000 because it was apparently taking passengers away from LH's services from BHX.

I also thought 8 based a/c was a little high. All new bases have only had a max of 4. I feel this is nearer the mark

Doesn't look like U2 are going anywhere.

http://www.easyjet.com/EN/news/20040312_01.html

easyJet, Europe's leading low-cost airline, celebrates it's second anniversary at Nottingham East Midlands Airport this weekend, with a birthday party on Saturday 13 March at the airport which will take the airline into it's 3rd year in true easyJet style.

 Big thumbs up
