ScottishLaddie,

New York's John F. Kennedy was the 41st busiest US airport based on total aircraft movements in 2003 with 291,299 movements.

Does anyone have the list of passengers served at each airport? I'm sure JFK would be higher on that list due to the higher capacity of the aircraft that serve the airport. It would be interesting to compare.

no offense but I could care less about "movements" at an airport. How about the 25 airports with the most passengers handled or take-off's and landings???

Correct me if i'm wrong but a "movement" may consist of everything from towing a plane to the hangar and little things like that.

No PHXMKE, total movements consists of just takeoffs and landings.

No. ACI's (Airport Council International)the official keeper of the records definition of movements are landing and takeoffs. Movements are more demanding on airports than passengers since you require much more infrastructure (i.e. gate, taxiways, runways etc.) That why when ORD slows down all other airports in the country slow down.

2003 25 Busiest US Airports

Sun Mar 07, 2004 12:57 pm

I've always looked at those figures with a grain of salt. I used to see MIA's figures in the mid to late 90's broken up by categories of aircraft operations and they always had far more military flights counted than I ever saw at the airport. Plus, I used to add up how many flights a day we assigned to gates, how many cargo flights we assigned to cargo positions and it was way lower than the total average daily flights for the airport and I know we didn't have hundreds of GA and military ops a day there.

And no offense but I'd rather photograph at an airport with more movements than numbers of passengers.

Yes, I'm sure. The official FAA movement figure is based on tracked aircraft inbound to that airport and each ARTS track on departing aircraft. Besides PHXMKE, what in the heck is the rolling eyes thing for? You don't think that a thirteen year air traffic control veteran would know about these things?

JFK has less aircraft movements because of the type of airport it is. It's the volume of passengers that counts there. If we look at gallons pumped of fuel a day we are one of the top. We pump close to 3.5 million gallons a day of jet-A. Give or take a few 100k. The JFK-NRT flights (747-400) can have around 50K gallons per flight into them. JFK averages about 8000 gallons per flight of jet-A pumped. That number includes the commuter jets and props along with B6 who at the most can have 5200 gallons pumped per flight to the west coast.

JFK might be low on movements, but we do make up for it other ways.

I see two airports that get no airline service, at least that I know of:
Phoenix Deer Valley & Denver Centennial. What's the third one?

I hope that isn't Orlando Sanford, I bet some of our UK friends would beg to differ Big grin I gets a bunch of charter traffic and last time I checked it was the home to Pan Am (I'd hate to call it a hub).

JFK is not a top airport when it comes to movements. While EWR, and LGA may have 10 RJ's landing in a 15 minute span, JFK could have a 747 land, and still have more passengers. When it comes to passengers movements, JFK is the busiest NY area airport, and would definitely be in the top 25 world airports.
727, L1011, MD80, A300, 777-200, 737-300, 737-700, 747-400, 757-200, 737-800, A320. E190, E135, 767-200, CRJ9

Deer Valley is way too small. It's more suited for personal aircraft and flight schools than commercial traffic.

As absurd as it sounds, back in the early 70's, Opa-locka Airport was THE busiest airport in the USA as far as aircraft movements are concerned. Opa-locka did not have any commercial service but had several flight training schools with substantial fleets of light aircraft and they were busy as hell with military veterans taking advantage of the GI Bill for flight training. They held the #1 ranking for a year or two.

(Oops, sorry had to edit this one. I didn't folow the columns on the printout carefully enough.)

I do believe that I would absolutely hate to be an air traffic controller there.

DB777,
At one time the L. A. area airports of VNY, LGB and SNA were also consistently in the top 10 for aircraft movements. Goes to show how expense and regulation has affected the general aviation segment of air transport.

Aaway: I have no doubts that you are right about VNY, LGB and SNA, especially VNY. I've never given much thought as to how GA has gone downhill over the years due to the expense and hassles but you're right. Opa-locka lost so much traffic over the years that the FAA turned the tower over to a private contractor and the tower closes at 2100 each night. The airport remains open and flights make general announcements on 120.7 as to what they're doing and they work it out themselves.

On a side and pointless note, I live close to there.

I wasn't expecting much when I went to spot there, but man that place has a never-ending flow of traffic. Swarms of COMAIR RJs and plenty of widebodies and a fantastic viewing area.

Is CMH in the top 50 by chance?

5T6:

I'll have to admit that Delta767300ER is right... More passengers = more commercial aircraft = more spotting fun. I'd much rather spot airplanes at BOS Boston Logan than DVT Phoenix Deer Valley. But according to your line of reasoning, DVT would be a much better choice (higher on the list). Part of what makes ATL so incredible is the amount of passengers it handles, requiring more wide body flights (767s, 777s, 747s etc) to handle those passengers at a few reduced movements.

Even comparing larger airports, accoring to you I should enjoy my home (SLC) for spotting over Boston (BOS) as well... At least spotting at boston I'd see A340s, 777s, 747s, A330s, etc. In SLC i'd be watching CRJs and 737-800s. Now really, which would mean more spotting fun???

Fanoftristars...

I guess it would depend on WHAT you like to watch. Here in El Paso, we don't get to see much of anything!  Crying

I like 'em all! RJ's, GA, Widebody, MD80's, 737's...if it has wings, it's a joy to watch! And since I usually like to listen in to ATC while I'm watching, the more planes the better.

Regards,

Mike

Miami --- MIA --- 30,060,241 --- (5.1)
Ft. Lauderdale --- FLL --- 17,037,261 --- 3.8

The above are very interesting figures to me because it wasn't that long ago that FLL had only 20-25% of MIA's total passenger figures. Now FLL has 57% of what is reported for MIA, which is one heck of an increase. And since a significant number of MIA's passengers are only transferring between gates and never set foot outside the airport, with little or no economic benefit to the county or the state, you can see where the action is in South Florida. This trend will continue as the geographic population center of South Florida shifts further north and people prefer to use the closest airport.

50 busiest airports in the US by passengers.

Its hard to believe these are 2003 numbers. DFW had a larger % decline in passenger traffic than STL?

Am I missing something? Where is San Jose (SJC)? I would think that SJC is busier then OAK or at least near it. They must have over 5.6 million pax a year.

Both of the lists posted here are very interesting. One thing that probably skews the movements list is where certain airports are hub airports for certain airlines. Within the top 20, excluding those where the traffic is mainly GA & biz jets, almost all of them major airline hubs, especially all of the top 11.

50 busiest airports in the US by passengers.

Its hard to believe these are 2003 numbers. DFW had a larger % decline in passenger traffic than STL?

They're 2002 numbers from the Dec 2003 issue of Airliner World magazine. I don't think the final 2003 numbers are out yet.

I forgot SJC. I had to delete the non-US airports from the list and I was thinking of San Jose, Costa Rica. Here's SJC:

San Jose --- SJC --- 11,115,778 --- (15.1)

I found a website that shows "full" list. It's not exactly complete because only airports that are ACI members are included in their lists. Many smaller airports aren't members and aren't listed.

http://www.aci-na.org/docs/2002passrankings.htm

It's from ACI - North America.

PortColumbus, CMH was 53rd with 237,979 movements. Just behind Houston Hobby (HOU) and Dallas Love (DAL), and just ahead of Tampa (TPA) and Nashville (BNA).
