DEN Or DIA Which Is It?

Sun Mar 07, 2004 1:33 pm

Okay, I know the 3-letter code for Denver is DEN, so why in the world do people still refer to it as DIA(Denver International Airport)?

Any input is much appreciated Smile

Because we as Americans love to abbreviate everything.

The airport code is DEN
The nickname is DIA

Perhaps they wish to differentiate it from Stapleton, which I think also used the IATA code DEN?

DIA is just a common name for it. DEN is the official code. It was DIA for a short time when Stapleton was still operating, but then when Stapleton closed, it took its code, which is DEN.

Hope that was helpful,

Alex.

Because that's what it is... People in Honolulu still use HIA for HNL, NAIA for MNL, etc...

It's a local thing. Just like the pronunciation of Prescott, AZ. If you live there, it's "pres-kit", otherwise you pronounce it as it's spelled. Everyone in the Denver area, and most of Colorado knows what you're talking about when you talk about DIA, but anywhere else in the nation, they would be lost.

When Denver Stapleton (DEN) was the active airport and the new one was being built, the new one was referred to as Denver International (DIA). After Stapleton closed, the identifier DEN was transferred to the new airport.

They pretty much did the same thing here in Texas when AUS (Mueller) closed and the former Bergstrom AFB (BSM) became the new Austin-Bergstrom airport and retained the old AUS identifier from Mueller, with BSM being retired.

The F.A.A. recognizes the new Denver airport under the airport code of DEN.

Footnote: DIA was the original code for Dulles until it was changed to IAD (apparently to avoid confusion with DCA--same logic behind IAH vs. HOU, I suppose). As for announcements of landing at "New York/Newark"--I hear Braniff1960's complaint all the time. Not sure what the problem is, since the Port Authority of NEW YORK and New Jersey runs it, and probably more than half of the arriving pax on the plane are anxious to get out of NJ and back across the Hudson asap.

The one I love is visiting the Kansas City area and the official weather reporting station is out at KCI. At least that's what the T.V. weather man reports. Where the heck is KCI? When I fly in it's always into MCI.
